Your favorite Halloween candy, as a cupcake

As one of Halloween's most iconic candies, candy corn seemed worthy of a makeover. After all, we've seen the candy mixed into cookie dough, sprinkled over ice cream, worked into brownies and blondies, even used to infuse vodka for a very adult sort of sticky tricky treat.

Benefits of chemical peels

Chemical peels are a treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin, forcing the skin to exfoliate and peel. The new skin is typically smoother and less wrinkled. Various peels are available including glycolic acid which targets fines lines and uneven skin tone, salicylic acid which targets oil and acne prone skin, and pigment peels which target hyperpigmented areas, freckles and age spots. For a less intense experience, sensitive skin peels are also available.

Wine tasting etiquette

Tasting in Wine Country and in local shops has changed some over the years. Events are often more elaborate, and both wineries and retail stores like ours invest a fair amount of time, energy and capital in creating an experience that is educational and rewarding. In many Wine Country areas, fees for tasting have increased with the effort and wine that goes into the tasting. In Napa, tasting fees of $75 for a reserve tasting at the more sought-after wineries are not unusual. In nearby Walla Walla, the charge to taste is more modest, but the wineries where tastings are complimentary are dwindling fast.

What is anti-aging medicine?

What comes to mind when you hear the term "anti-aging?" Most would think some type of beauty product, whether that means a topical facial cream, masks, shampoos, conditioners or laser treatments. However, anti-aging and regenerative medicine is actually a "medical specialty of active scientific research aimed at the early prevention, detection, treatment and reversal of age-related decline." It has become a remarkably cutting-edge field of medicine. A legitimate, well-trained anti-aging and regenerative medicine specialist will be certified as a diplomat of the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. I have earned this certification and practice in the Liberty Lake area.

Bullying, no easy subject

Sitting in front of my computer on my living room couch Sunday morning, I peek out the window to see graying clouds steal the blue sky attempting to warm the Earth. I rise from my seat, pour my second cup of coffee, pet Alex the cat and think: I'm stalling. I pace from the front of the house to the back, give Alex another scratch under the chin and sit back on my perch in front of the screen - nothing.

Pigs and candidates

“If you catch a pig in the poke, you better like pork!” An applicable idiom for the American electorate, who find themselves dismayed with the candidates who ended up in the ‘poque’ (French for bag), or in America’s case, on the roster this election cycle.

It's harvest time for food

Food for Thought

Autumn in North Idaho revives one's soul. Spring and summer days filled with casually planting, weeding, mowing, mulching and trimming finally offer the bounty nurtured from seed six months ago. It's harvest time. Picking tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers, onions, herbs and peppers on a crisp, dew filled fall morning create the need for an active kitchen in the afternoon. My wife and I spent our day making then freezing tomato soup, baking zucchini bread, drying hot peppers and picking the remaining cucumbers and zucchini as the vines wither from exhaustion.

This Easter, master perfectly creamy scalloped potatoes

With Easter on its way, my mind has turned to scalloped potatoes, always a big hit at a holiday feast. And really, what's not to love? We're talking about sliced potatoes baked in a cream sauce, then topped with cheese or crumbs or both! Still, it takes some care to ensure that the potatoes are properly seasoned, properly tender, and creamy as a dream.
