Obama: Honor peace officers this week

Our Nation's public safety officers are heroes who risk their lives to keep our families and communities safe.  Each of these brave men and women goes to work not knowing what dangers might lie ahead, making tremendous sacrifices to uphold justice and protect the innocent.  This week, we extend our gratitude for their service to our country.  We also remember those killed in the line of duty, and we mourn their loss and honor the loved ones they left behind.

A robust fall and winter schedule

As in years past, we resumed our schedule of winemaker dinners and tastings in September. The season got off to such a fast start that we are later than normal with writing what will be a robust schedule over the coming months. In fact, we have our events booked out through the spring of 2019! As much as our wine events are a draw for wine consumers, they are just as much a draw for winemakers from around the Western US and in some cases, around the globe. We are fortunate that many winemakers are approaching us to get on our schedule of events, but the ultimate beneficiaries are the wine consumers here in North Idaho, as they get to spend time with some of the brightest lights in our industry.

The best medicine is lifting others up

Health care providers often have the difficult task of telling their patients things they don’t want to hear.

BOOMERS: Those were the days

My generation, “the Baby Boomers,” has seen the massive collapse of the moral and civil fiber of America. Our children and grandchildren have been born into it and so consider it the norm. It was not always so.

The perils of winter newspaper delivery

My employee was crying when she called. After the brief conversation, we were concerned she may have a fractured elbow and a concussion. Thankfully, a trip to urgent care confirmed neither was the case, but she was certainly battered and bruised.

AMADOR: Thanks to Rep. Sims

I would like to thank the Republican voters of District 4 for the opportunity to represent our community in the Idaho State Legislature. This primary race was an incredibly close election and I realize that there are many individuals in this community who supported Rep. Kathy Sims in her reelection bid. Political elections are a critical piece of our American way of life, and being so, they often engender a great deal of passion from the supporters of candidates. Although Rep. Sims and I certainly have differences of opinion on various policy issues facing our state, I think it is important to recognize and thank her for her numerous contributions and service to Coeur d’Alene and Idaho.

RULING: Proof of too much power

The Supreme Court is out of control. The High Court is making its decisions based on the personal preferences of the judges — not on our existing laws or on our traditions. If a judge likes an idea then he or she declares that idea to be constitutional and it becomes the Law of the Land. If the judge does not like the idea then he or she declares the law to be unconstitutional and void in our society. These decisions have the full force of law and they overrule all the laws passed by the legislative branch of our government.

DEVIN: An ace reporter

My congratulations to Ms. Devin Weeks for her article “Help from above” about Civil Air Patrol. I was quite concerned when I found we had a media person on board and our Public Information Officer was airborne! That sort of thing happens in a volunteer organization — we were a little short of crew and our PIO was also aircrew qualified. Our Incident Commander was really busy so he introduced me to Devin. My experience with reporters is very limited but has not always been a positive one.

SPORTS OFFICIALS: Deserve respect, gratitude

All three of the schools in our wonderful community have excellent sports programs. All of the coaches, parents and players get a lot of recognition for their support and hard work, but the real heroes of every game, match or tournament are the officials. They make each and every game possible for our sports programs, but they do not seem to get the recognition they deserve.

SPILL: Sense of urgency is needed

Unfortunately with the oil crisis in the Gulf, we need to act soon. It is too late to remain complacent. I hope we can galvanize the President, Congress and all citizens to focus their combined attention on saving our civilization and ensuring a future for all our our children.

Birthday bash in the blink of an eye

Happy Birthday America! How goes your noble experiment in liberty over these many 238 years? July 4, 1776 seems like a long time ago. But in the larger scheme, it is merely a blink; and what a difference that blink has made.
