ELECTION: One goal for everybody

Idaho has the lowest minimum wage and our students score the lowest on standardized tests nationwide. What’s got me wondering is why people don’t recognize a change is in order? Seriously in order. How long are we going to lay back and trust our state to do the right thing for the people since they haven’t in 25 years? Our level of education for K-12 is deplorable, as is Idaho’s minimum wage. I’ve connected the dots between education and minimum wage jobs.

JULY 4: Another vital anniversary

Independence Day is always a proud day for Americans, but July 4 also marks another milestone in our democracy — the anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). FOIA is a federal law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 to address the people's "right to know."

THANKS: Music to our ears

To all of the musicians, donors and patrons in attendance for our final concert on the evening of April 24 at the Kroc Center, as well as those donors and patrons who have supported the Coeur d’Alene Symphony this past year in our effort to keep the music alive for the 2020-2021 Chamber Concert Series season — THANK YOU!

ELECTION: Vote for Griffin, Schroeder and Gibbons

Do not let our School District be held hostage to the political divisiveness we’ve seen in West Bonner County School District and the NIC board. I have lived in the Silver Valley for 50+ years. I support our public education system and the very dedicated and hardworking employees in School District 391. It’s easy to take for granted what you have until you don’t have it. Democracy, public education, and public libraries are just a few of the systems that serve all of us and are crucial to the functioning of successful communities.

Why we're going to the dogs

Idaho is a special state. Most people are responsible, friendly and hard working. Independents, Democrats and Republicans alike, really share a Libertarian commonality that creates a more self-reliant attitude than in any other state that I have lived or worked in. I was born in Montana, moved to Spokane, lived in Sandpoint, married my only wife, transferred to Seattle and spent 13 years there, raising three kids. External special interests now run those states and there is little community spirit because you can never really get a handle on the culture.

Universities benefit cities in many ways

With education reform on our minds and ballots, I've been thinking about the role of the university, particularly as it impacts North Idaho.

A soldier died today

A soldier died today

On this Memorial Day we honor our war dead. Countless are those who heroically gave their lives so that we can live ours, knowing our freedom is because of them. Our Gold Star families cherish the memory of their loved ones lost in war. Our Blue Star families pray every day that their loved ones will come home safely. The families who live in freedom here at home while their loved ones are doing battle in foreign lands, know the sacrifice, not only of their troopers, but their own anguish. Currently it is said that one percent serve to protect the 99 percent here at home. These brave men and women on the front lines of freedom need and deserve our devotion. To the families who have loved ones who gave it all, we honor them on this 150th anniversary of Memorial Day.

Cd'A CHAMBER: How is a chamber relevant today?

Cd'A CHAMBER: How is a chamber relevant today?

The idea of a Chamber of Commerce can be traced back to the 1500’s in France, when chamber members collaborated to meet the needs of a collective group. While that initial objective remains, the chamber’s history has grown into serving unique business communities across the globe. For 110 years, our Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber has embodied this tradition and as a result, has built an incredible legacy of serving the business community. Today, the needs of our members look a little different than they did 20, 10, or even two years ago. Because of the digital revolution, businesses now have a multitude of options available to them to help drive growth and connections. Member organizations must innovate to remain relevant in the modern world.

RESPECT: Letter spelled it right

Thanks to Michael Perry for his letter explaining how respect goes both ways with our citizens and our City Council. You put into words what many of the citizens of our fair city have been thinking for a long time!

OUR TOWN: A place of tolerance

We are proud to be part of the Coeur d’Alene community, especially at this moment. When our nation was rocked by the appalling event in Minneapolis, every citizen was horrified and many decided to protest. Unfortunately, rioters, looters and thugs infiltrated peaceful demonstrations in every part of the country — every part, that is, EXCEPT North Idaho.

VOTE: It's key to our liberty

"The world has never had a good definition of the word ‘liberty,' and the American people, just now are much in the want of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.

HART: Why is he still in office?

I am perplexed and hope that some of you might be able to help me understand what is going on. I know we are a values-oriented community. We hold some principles, or moral values, in high regard and try to live them to the best of our ability. Thousands attend the many churches that dot our landscape. I suspect that most of us can recite the Ten Commandments.

Support Northern Lakes levy

As we vote on Nov. 6 in the general election, we all have major decisions to make. The primary vote is for president of the United States which will affect our country. Another very important vote is for the Northern Lakes Fire District Levy that will affect all of us locally.

Giving season - all year long

While it truly is inspiring to see the pictures with the super-sized checks being given to organizations by their benefactors, our Realtor spirit of giving is a way of life throughout the year. Although we have no way of knowing, nor should we, what our individual members contribute to our community in the way of cash. We can see their efforts as they remain active in their communities, attending and conducting fund raising events.

Parental rights: Do we have them in Idaho?

I would like to begin by informing you about the current status of our parental rights in Idaho. In 2011, a bill sponsored by Representative Bob Nonini and Senator Russ Fulcher, and co-sponsored by House majority leader Mike Moyle and Senator Steve Vick, was introduced about parental rights. These representatives encouraged Congress to pass the Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in order to protect the rights of all parents. The idea of this bill was that parents would be ensured the sole right to be in charge of the upbringing and education of their children.
