Winter Wine Rodeo III

Pour lists are being compiled, restaurants and vendors are committing, layout of the room is near completion, which can mean only one thing... The third annual Winter Wine Rodeo is scheduled and will be the biggest and best gathering of food and wine yet. It is sometimes hard for us to believe that it is the third of these events to take place, and each year it seems to be more fun, with more folks from North Idaho and around the area gathering to sample more than a hundred wines, food from great local restaurants and get a little holiday shopping done too.

Grower wines

One of the many recent trends in the wine industry has been the appeal of "Grower Champagne." This is champagne produced by the same folks that grow the grapes. We have tasted many great ones from LaSalle, Copinet and others. Non-grower champagnes are typically the larger producers like Veuve Clicquot where the grapes are purchased from other vineyards and the winery only makes the "bubbly."

Vintage 2012 preview

As August opens we enter the phase of the wine grape vintage when winemakers start to wring their hands and grape growers start to look at long term weather forecasts and anxiously eye their crop on a daily basis, watching for the desired progress. The anxiety level for all in the domestic wine industry is even more acute in 2012 given the challenging and for some disastrous back to back vintages of 2010 and 2011.
