On a higher level than rest of nation
From the moment they stepped off the plane in Kansas a little over a week ago, the North Idaho College women's basketball team had been playing at a level higher than the competition in the northwest.
Toyota recalls 600K Sienna minivans
WASHINGTON - As congressional investigators dig further into potential electronic problems in runaway Toyotas, the automaker is facing other safety concerns, recalling 600,000 Sienna minivans over rusting spare tire holders.
'An all-day thing'
When we think of taste, food quickly comes to mind. But the 30th annual Taste of Coeur d’Alene event is definitely more than just a place to get your grub on.
Soon it will be time to rest up
My Garden Path
Kopper King is what they call a "hardy" hibiscus. Tropical hibiscus plants won't survive our winters, but these will. The plants are slow to come up in the spring but when they do, they grow quickly. The blossoms are worth waiting for as the flowers are huge.

Hackers accessing security systems
On Oct. 24, I wrote about a disturbing incident that happened at a friend’s house with his Nest security system getting hacked and how unsettled it made us feel that a hacker was actually spying on us while inside a private residence. Nest claimed their system wasn’t hacked because the bad actor gained access through the user’s own password.

SHOPPING: Mask up, leaders
On April 16, the Mayor of Los Angeles decreed that anyone going into a grocery store must wear a face mask. There is nothing wrong with that everywhere in Kootenai County. I went out yesterday from my hibernation to buy a few products and was astonished at how many people were going into Safeway stores as well as Fred Meyer with no gloves, no face mask, little concern of social distancing, and probably not too concerned with the community as a whole.

OIL: Obama pulls a slick one
As one of millions of Americans struggling with sharply increasing prices I felt immense gratitude to our president for releasing the emergency stores of oil to alleviate our suffering by lowering gas prices at the pump. Then my emotions waned and my brain kicked in and I realized that the oil purchased to fill in the reserve was far cheaper than the oil we will have to buy to replace it, the cost could be double that of the initial outlay.

TAXES: Tale of two cities
It is well known that resident property taxes in Post Falls are more than double those in Hayden even though both generally provide the same services. One might conclude that Hayden is a more desirable place to live and buy a house and certainly more affordable.
WAGES: Risks of higher minimum
Minimum wage — a beginning to your place in life, not the level you plan on spending while supporting a family. A Republican thinks “This is my beginning.” The start of the journey that will level off at the peak of my education or the top of my talents. A Democrat, on the other hand, thinks, “I enjoy not having to have any responsibility and it’s sort of fun flipping burgers so all I have to do is raise the minimum wage and stay right here.” Little does he realize that the minimum wage sets the price of everything and he will never be able to buy anything without going deep in debt. Something Democrats have been doing for years. Is this so hard to understand? Then why hasn’t Congress said this to the people?
CONFUCIUS: Can't trust the Chinese
Kudos to Mr. Sloan’s article on China’s disregard of patents, industrial espionage and anything else they can glean without paying for. They have done this forever since the first U.S. industry transplanted itself into China. You cannot go into any store and not find an item “hecho en China.” And who taught them how to make all these items? Us, so it is no surprise that they think they can copy anything, subvert people into stealing or buy their way into technology.

DARK: Doesn't mean sex offender here
Oh great! Now if our porch light is off tonight our neighbors will be wondering if we’re sex offenders? What if we’re not home? If we’re sick or invalids? If our religion doesn’t recognize Halloween? If we don’t have money to buy candy? Why couldn’t you just have suggested that trick-or-treaters not approach houses without porch lights on as safe and courteous?
