Go natural with Alpaca socks, yarn, gifts

Wow... the summer heat is upon us and thankfully our Alpacas have had their annual shearing to harvest their fiber and protect them from the heat. Our family business has three main components that work in unison to bring Alpaca and other natural fibers to consumers. First we have our herd of 17 alpacas. They are shorn once per year and this usually takes place right after the last rains and before the intense summer heat arrives. The alpacas don't like being shorn but they do appreciate the fiber being removed before the summer heat sets in. We have a number of chores to complete before the shearer arrives. We give them their annual vaccines, clip their nails and medicate them for worms. The fiber is then processed and turned into products. This year we are working with Pendleton mills to create luxurious Alpaca blankets.

MY TURN: Dereliction of Duty

Congress again avoided a government shutdown and kicked the can down the road for another 45 days, but much damage has been and continues to be done to our all-volunteer military by irresponsible members of Congress.

TEACHERS: They aren't the enemy

How did our country get to the point where we are attacking teachers and public employees while the men and women that head the banks and large financial institutions that drove our country to the financial rim continues to flourish? When we cut teachers salaries whether it is in Idaho or Wisconsin we are essentially taxing teachers and public employees to balance our budgets while the top 2 percent get more tax cuts.

NATION: Now scraping bottom

Thank you Mr. Don Phelan (Cd’A Press on 7-19-13) for stating the truth about our current society, media and most of all our political leadership! I cannot believe that our country has “stooped” this low. We as a nation can no longer determine what is true.

PYP: Exercise freedom of choice

One of the greatest freedoms we have as Americans is our freedom of choice. We are fortunate to be able to live in a country where we can make independent choices whether it is where we live, the kind of car we drive or the education we choose for our children.

THANK YOU: To Kootenai County Commissioner Bill Brooks

On April 13, Bayview residents appealed to the Kootenai County Board of Commissioners over a major subdivision with 24 homes on 8 acres destined for our small town. Our primary concern was the opening of a secondary exit that would create a thoroughfare through our quiet neighborhoods. Incidentally, this second egress is not a county code since the subdivision is less than 25 homes.

LEVY: Do it for grandkids

Many voters in our community are retired or are empty nesters like ourselves. If all households without any children living in the home vote no to save a few dollars a month, we are sending a message to our kids that education is not a priority.

THANKS: For event support

On behalf of the 3Cs Coeur d’Aleers, I would like to offer a big thank you to the members of our community who came to our free Christmas concert Dec. 7. This is our annual gift to the community. The Gathering Place at Lutheran Church of the Master was filled with an enthusiastic audience enjoying our wide range of genres in the choral selections.

ADDIS: For state House

In the upcoming November election, our community will have a great opportunity to elect Jim Addis to the Legislature for District 4 Seat A. Working with Jim over the past few years, we have noticed that he uses his many years of business experience to solve problems. We believe that he will serve our area the same way. Knowing Jim, he loves our community and wants to work for us. Jim will put our interests first.

LEVY: Families are cutting, too

To Hazel Bauman regarding the Coeur d'Alene levy, here are our facts: We are cutting our budgets just to feed our kids but you aren't willing to find ways to cut your budget? At what point will the school districts be fiscally responsible and make the cuts everyone else is having to make, instead of trying to guilt us into giving more and more money that we do not have to spare?

Our flag evokes wide array of responses

June 14, 2010 marks 233 years since the Continental Congress of the fledgling United States approved the official design of our American Flag. It has been 94 years since President Woodrow Wilson officially designated this day as "Flag Day," or "Flag Birthday," and it has been 61 years since President Truman signed into law the resolution of Congress, establishing June 14 as the annual day of celebration of the ideals represented by our Stars and Stripes.

Comprehensive Plan cannot come soon enough for Coeur d’Alene

After my last Planning and Zoning Meeting I have taken stock on both the complexities of our charmed city and the drawbacks to that charm. I am frequently
