Why Hoarding Of Hydroxychloroquine Needs To Stop

A family of old antimalarial drugs — including one that some patients rely on to treat their lupus or rheumatoid arthritis — is becoming harder to get in the United States, pharmacists say, partly because of remarks President Donald Trump has made, highlighting the drugs as a potential treatment for COVID-19.

What helps indigestion, heartburn and reflux?

In the U.S., it is estimated that 60 to 70 million people suffer from digestive-related diseases. Doctors are writing $114 million in acid-reducing medication prescriptions. That doesn’t include over-the-counter sales. It’s big business! What’s worse is that taking acid-reducing medications to treat these issues can actually cause, or contribute to many of the diseases we are suffering from today. Yet there are many remedies that actually fix the problem, not just cover them up.

Acupuncture: An old standby that works

Doctor of Oriental Medicine

We often view acupuncture as a "new" method of healing. However, it is one of the oldest. It has been developed, refined and instituted as the primary healing modality in China for thousands of years. Conventional medicine as we know it today has only been around approximately 150 years. The changes in conventional medicine have been drastic over past decades. It truly is amazing. However, there is some deep comfort in the old-time, tried and true. It is a historical fact that the old "snake oils" of the past, that didn't work, were quickly run out of town. Acupuncture, instead, is enjoying a resurgence, as more research is demonstrating the effectiveness of this remarkable healing art.

Time to make health care truly affordable

As the Idaho Legislature once again attempts to resolve the problem of health care, it seems fitting to look at the state of health care costs in America as a whole. Unfortunately, for more than 70,000 Idaho residents who have no health coverage at all, many will go untreated or, worse, wait until needing hospitalization, thus leaving an even bigger bill for someone else to pay. Many without health coverage will also die, or put their families at risk of financial ruin.

Kindness does count

STARTING THE NEW YEAR ASHAMED: Ashamed probably isn’t the right word to use. “Humbled” is better, much more descriptive and accurate. It’s New Year’s Day 2018 and I’m writing my column for this coming Thursday. Early this morning, one of my regular readers called and left a message. She is an elderly lady and was “plowed in” and couldn’t get out of her driveway. In addition to going out to bring in her mail, she needed to pick up a much-needed prescription. I was glad she called me for help. I called her back in about an hour and a half. What she told me literally brought tears to my eyes. Before I had been able to call her back, she called Ken Roberge of Specialty Tree Services (specialitytree.com). He answered her call, and volunteered to come out and help her. By the time I called her back, Mr. Roberge had already solved her problems, including driving her to the pharmacy to pick up her medication — all on New Year’s Day! Thanks Ken, you’re the kind of person/business owner who makes our corner of the world a great place to live.

Buy or rent?

Realtors will be quick to reply that you should buy, but let’s face it, we’re biased. If you want an objective opinion do some research online. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is a great resource for those of you who want to educate yourselves on how the advantages of Buying vs. Renting a home apply to your situation. In addition to the step-by-step process outlined on their website: http://www.hud.gov/buying/index.cfm there is a handy little calculator on realtor.com that will help you decide whether or not it makes sense to buy a home: https://www.realtor.com/mortgage/tools/rent-or-buy-calculator/ Click on advanced options. There you can enter in your current rent, let’s say $750 per month. Enter in the purchase price of a home, for this example we will use $200,000. Enter the percent down from your lender, but don’t forget about Idaho Housing, FHA, Rural Development and USDA loans that offer lower down payment loans. Then put in the number of years you plan to stay in your home. The default for this field is 30 years, but you can put in whatever you like. The yearly property tax rate is defaulted at 1 percent, so you may want to check with the Assessor or your Realtor to get a rate for the home you are considering buying. The calculator also projects a modest appreciation of 2 percent per year for the time you are in your home.

Report: Millions suffer long-lasting pain in U.S.

WASHINGTON - Nearly a third of Americans experience long-lasting pain - the kind that lingers for weeks to months - and too often feel stigma rather than relief from a health care system poorly prepared to treat them, the Institute of Medicine said Wednesday.
