We're in!

Just over a month ago, The Dinner Party started on what is the most monumental undertaking of our 12 years in business here in Coeur d’Alene. Not only for us, but more importantly, for our customers and wine consumers here in North Idaho. We started the process of moving and expanding our shop to twice its original size. We are now in the new shop and have been open for business for about a month. Virtually all of the “work” is completed, with the biggest exception being our outside signs, which are now on the way.

MILITIA: Taking care of our own

The recent appearance in downtown Coeur d’Alene of our “local militia” brought yeas and nays, for sure. But I think there is another message. And that is that local citizens will show up when needed, that they will cooperate with our local law enforcement, and if a group bent on destruction heads our way, they might ought to think twice because we take care of our own in North Idaho. Deterrence is also a tool for good. Not the same as but kind of like prayer, which is always good.

SCHOOLS: Impact on society

I would like to answer Stephanie Gossard’s letter that was in Sunday’s Press. My feeling is the exact opposite of hers regarding our tax? dollars going to support public schools. I believe that our educators have been very transparent and worked very hard to get the most for our tax dollars.

SCHOOLS: Yes to levy, bond

Coeur d’Alene is the most amazing place to raise a family. It is a small town where you run into your kids’ teachers at the gym, the park, at local restaurants, the grocery store, and our local beaches. They choose to live in this wonderful place and work with our kids to help them become incredible people.

RIPOFF: The great huckleberry heist

I can’t believe the people who are in charge of our forest lands came up with a way to screw the hardworking citizens of Idaho. We have the lowest minimum wage in the country. Our senior citizens struggle to either eat or get their prescriptions. Our young people who struggle to make it on minimum wage pick huckleberries to buy school supplies or just have a little extra income.

IMMIGRANTS: Answers needed now

I just have a few questions about the arrival of so many immigrants at our southern borders.

People make the difference

As Mother Nature struggles to figure out just what she wants to do with the remaining days on winter's calendar, we at North Idaho College have no difficulty in knowing what to do.

GUNS: Objective outlooks needed

Before $100 a barrel oil prices made it unaffordable, the bride and I enjoyed hooking onto our fifth wheel RV each fall and joining our fellow snowbirds on the open road south. Like many of our fellow travelers, we exercised our Second Amendment Right and, for our own safety and peace of mind, carried a firearm inside our winter home on wheels.

No headline

Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho would like to thank the community for their support of our 8th annual Hearts for Homes fundraiser on March 24. We are truly fortunate to live and work in North Idaho, and it’s even more apparent after seeing how many people attended our event that night at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn. Habitat’s housing programs cannot exist without our amazing supporters and volunteers, and they’re also the only reason our dinner and auction was such a success. We owe a special thank you to the volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event possible, and to Carrie Schulp for attending and sharing her story of home ownership with everyone.

TROOPS: Girl, donors pitch in

In this time of unrest, unemployment and just plain despair, I wanted to say a huge heartfelt thank you to our community. Our 8-year-old daughter, Faith, decided to have a fundraiser for troop care packages by having a lemonade/treat stand during our family garage sale the weekend of Aug. 12 here in Coeur d Alene. We had such positive responses, support and "loosened" wallets that our daughter's total two-day efforts (with a little help from family/friends) raised a total of: $158!

IMMIGRANTS: U.S. punishes the legitimate

It breaks my heart and infuriates me to read about the way our government is cruelly manipulating the thousands of educated and highly skilled legal immigrants who have spent years trying to become citizens of this country. They have followed all the rules and have made tremendous sacrifices, both financially and emotionally, to become citizens and permanent residents, yet Washington has provided an open door (albeit a back door) policy for the MILLIONS of ILLEGAL immigrants who are usurping government benefits, breaking laws with impudence, committing crimes and living off OUR tax dollars with Washington’s blessing. Does it not seem ironic that our government is doing its best to discourage the very people we should be WELCOMING into our country, and welcoming those we should be doing everything in our power to DISCOURAGE?

In honor of our nation

Two hundred thirty-six years ago, on July 4, 1776, the birthday of our nation, the American Colonies declared their Independence from Great Britain. By any estimation that was an extremely bold step, filled with risk, fraught with danger and yet, in the eyes of a very intelligent and accomplished people, worthy of a commitment of lives, fortunes and sacred honor.

The complex health picture

With ever-increasing complexity in life, we learn to compartmentalize our life in an attempt to bring order to chaos. We have our spiritual life, family life, work life, social life, animal/pet life, recreational life and our health. Our health gets further compartmentalized into food, exercise, stress-relief, sleep, hydration, energy and disease-management. The disease-management is even further compartmentalized, or fractionalized, to all the specialty fields of medicine. We have a doctor for our joints, one for our heart, another for our digestive system, another for our emotional health, etc. Even within these specialties are sub-specialties! Wow! Is this wise?
