TUBBS: Protect our precious hill
Last week we took our first Tubbs Hill hike of the summer. It was a beautiful day and the views of the lake were spectacular; however, one view was disturbing. Scattered along the trail were lots of cigarette butts. This was very upsetting to us, especially since there already has been one fire this season on Tubbs Hill and the entire area is very dry. We hope that common sense will prevail and smokers will smoke before entering Tubbs Hill and wait until they leave before smoking again. Let’s all protect our beautiful Hill and keep it safe.
VETERANS: All join in to help
Recently on 11/16/13 the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 889 held a spaghetti dinner and auction. The proceeds will go to local veterans and their families in our community. At Christmas we work with the Veterans Service officer to find the truly needy in our town, and we gift them with the proceeds from this event.
HOMELESS: A cause to abandon
Friends, Coeur d’Aleneians, taxpayers, lend me your eyes. I write not to praise the homeless cause but to bury it. The good that St. Vincent/Fresh Start does is dwarfed by the evil that lives after it. Much praise is heaped on its leaders and much money granted its industry. Yet the program to end homelessness only grows our homeless.
REED: One amazing man
Scott Reed was our friend and our attorney.
EAGLES: A veteran's salute
As a veteran, I got the rare opportunity to go on an eagle watching tour on a Resort boat sponsored by the BLM. I just wanted to thank them for offering this cruise once a year free to some of the veterans in our area. It was very well done and they made us feel very welcome and proud to have served our country.
AMADOR: Strong and sensible
We are writing in support of Paul Amador for House Seat 4B. We need strong leadership in our state and strong representation for Coeur d’Alene.
TEACHER: That's how kids learn
Hats off and high fives to Melissa Giles, PE teacher at Skyway Elementary! Her creative use of pumpkins and kitchen scraps looked to be a great success with her students. These are the kinds of high interest activities that challenge our kids to think, create and work together. I don’t know about you, but decorating pumpkins is a whole lot more interesting way to learn about food groups than the way I was taught!

KHS: We depend upon you
Thank you, Justin Kane for your kind words regarding Kootenai Humane Society. You are absolutely correct! We are NOT affiliated with or receive funding from any animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society of the United States.
AVISTA: A powerful salute
Kudos to Avista ground crews! No matter the bitter cold and ice and snow we are in at this time of year or heat of summer, rain, thunderstorms, hail, snow or day or night, our Avista people go out and up with high buckets to the blown over trees, poles, blown circuits, etc. Wearing firefighter heavy clothing, heaving tools of every kind they may need for the situation, keeping all equipment on high alert for the next call-out.
PRESS: Divorce FB comments
Some time last fall I wrote to Editor Mike Patrick about my opinion on The Press’s association with Facebook and the ability of we citizens to contribute comments on the Letters to the Editor online section. It seems that if one hates Facebook and their invasion of our privacy and their manipulation of information and their rabid hate of Conservative ideas that we cannot contribute our opinions or even “like” comments about the letters.

Today is Day Four of Constitution Week commemorating the signing of our Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
GEORGE WASHINGTON: On political parties
Unsurmountable obstacles caused by time and space cause us to ignore the wisdom of our Founding Fathers. Our first President George Washington is an example.
PRIMARIES: Open them to all voters
We are in the midst of primary season, when we select the presidential candidates for the upcoming November election. This should be a matter of great importance, but here in Idaho we have allowed less than two hundredths of one percent (.014%) of our population to make that determination for one of our major parties.
YOUTH SPORTS: Thanks to all the coaches
I want to give a big shout out to all the athletic coaches that volunteer so much of their time for the children in our community. These dedicated people generously give their time, energy and expertise to mentor and guide our youth athletes. Not only are they teaching them sports, but they are teaching them lifelong values of teamwork, discipline and resilience during challenging moments.
