SCHOOLS: Schedule cause for worry

I am concerned with the new school schedule, as are many of my friends with children in the district. For those of us that are in a family with two full time working parents our question is what are we to do with our small children for an extra hour and a half every Monday, as it is not feasible to adjust our work schedule.

DEER: Varmints have two legs

The deer eat our tomatoes and destroy our beautiful landscaping, get rid of them. The squirrels eat the bird seed, get rid of them. The birds make a mess on our decks, get rid of them. The turkeys are pests, get rid of them. The beaver and otter interfere with our fishing line, get rid of them. The moose and black bear just scare the hell out of us, get rid of them. The elk, well, we already got rid of them.

TAILGATE: Truly a special event

I am ASB President at Lake City High School. My No. 1 goal this year was to make our school a school of respect, tolerance and unity. I want every student to come to Lake City and know that they are loved and important.

ATTN: Idaho Legislature, Mind the Gap!

From the gaps in our teeth left by the gaps in our healthcare coverage to the gap many Idahoan workers face on the first of the month, all of us mind our respective gaps – all but our politicians.

We’re glad our community is talking about school levies and wanting to learn more

I was there — at that prayer rally!

It was so encouraging after being separated from worshipping together with other believers in Christ in our churches for several weeks, to be among people who wanted to pray with other like-minded believers on a beautiful afternoon in an outdoor park in North Idaho; it was nothing less than an inspiration and a renewal in hope that we all needed.

America's credibility chickens are coming home to roost

The Trump Administration is having trouble convincing our allies of the necessity of a confrontation with Iran. Administration claims that Iran is posing an increasing threat to U.S. interests in the region have been met with skepticism by a number of governments.

LEVY: Former sups endorse it

Coeur d' Alene is a special place. It's one where we as citizens have over the years shown our support for our local schools, parks, public art and music. As a community we have come to expect our students to perform at a high level in academics and activities. This level of quality is our collective community "normal." It is not accidental that our school district has such a quality reputation; it is the sum of many years of community support, involved parents, effective and caring educators, and the leadership of school principals.

LEVY: Questions that need answers

I'm having difficulty deciding how I will vote on the upcoming $26 million levy for the Coeur d'Alene School District. I support the best possible education for our children, 100 percent. But in tough economic times it's important to make sure we're as efficient and effective as possible with our taxes.

IMMIGRANTS: Tell us how many are here

Give us the numbers. We have a major crisis at the Mexican border that doesn’t get the attention it should. Citizens should know what our government is spending and on what. After all, it’s our tax dollars that are paying for this avoidable mess.

CDA SCHOOL LEVIES: Vote yes

As our community considers the upcoming levy vote for the Coeur d’Alene School District, one question I have heard many times is “Why doesn’t the school district restrict its budget to state provided funds?”

OPINION: DAN ENGLISH — Let’s see if our voting system is safe

Of the many things that makes America great, one of the most central and important is the process by which we all exercise our democracy, the voting process. We, as a country, have been a world leader in how to conduct honest, fair, reliable elections. And the reliability of our honest elections is the basis of another great strength of ours: the peaceful transfer of power.

More evidence of local recovery

We were delighted to report last week that we see continued strength in our local housing market and as our staff completes their analysis we see that our current production levels are nearly those seen in 2006! That was not our most stellar year of performance when measured by number of homes sold, but 2006 reflected a decline in numbers from 2004 and 2005, yet our prices were still climbing well into 2007. By October's end in 2006 we had sold 2,041 single family homes in Kootenai County. This year, we have sold 1,915. While that may be a significant difference, it demonstrates an excellent turnaround for our market.

PEACE: Where is U.S. commitment?

On the first Sunday morning of December l941, I was studying for my initial final exam at Cal Berkeley. I was 17 years old and was reading my notes for Philosophy 101 while listening to music on the radio. At one point the program was interrupted to announce Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Within six months I joined millions of men and women in the Armed Forces. Four years later both the Axis powers had surrendered. We never doubted the reasons for our involvement in the war.
