Our summer favorites
Our first couple years, for Mary being back in the Northwest and for me living here for the first time, we frankly wondered if summer would ever arrive. Of course, that was the springs of 2008 and 2009. This year, spring has been spectacular and summer appears to be on schedule, so our thoughts turn to firing up the grill and some of our favorite summer food and wine pairings. The food and wine both get a bit lighter, flavors fresher, and the aforementioned grill works overtime. Here are some ideas for you to enjoy all summer long!
Seasons and regions, the easiest way to pair food and wine
The very roots of winemaking are firmly planted in the old world appellations of Europe. Grape varietals are planted and date their lineage to the areas they grow best, driven by all that makes up terroir. Similarly, in certain areas of Europe, foods other than grapes are grown and livestock is raised based on how the crops do in those areas. As you travel around Europe, it's impossible not to notice the regional variations in cuisine. Specific areas become renowned and sought after for certain dishes and preparations.
The summer reds of 2015
Food off the grill, summer picnics on the beach or your own backyard deck, and late suppers outside, summer is here and our diets move to lighter foods. Along the same lines, as the days lengthen and the temperatures warm, we see our tastes in wine change, too. Barbecue and dining outside just naturally lead us to drinking wines with a bit lighter body to go along with the temperatures. Here is a rundown of some of the new summer reds and some of our old favorites.
Winter recommendations
The calendar says February, despite the spring-like temperatures and rain all weekend. We will leave the unseasonable weather to Cliff Harris to let us know when it will end, but we will take care of recommending some great new wines we have found to take us through the shortened days and cool nights.
The best use of 'best of' lists
In my mailbox last night was the most recent installment of the Wine Spectator top 100 list. This is one of the most anticipated rankings of wines when it is released each December. For good reason. The number of reviews annually in the Spectator is exhaustive, and the top 100 issue is their culling of all those reviews for the 100 wines they think the most of, although the phrasing and the focus of that list has shifted a bit. This year, the cover of the issue reads “the 100 most interesting wines.”

Looking forward to spring
We know from our day to day conversations with customers in the shop that winter has worn on all of us a bit this year. We are happy for our many friends that have been able to “bug out” to warmer and drier climes. In the meantime though we will look forward to the spring release wines coming this year. We have had a preview with several we have tried recently and we are excited by the quality we have seen thus far.
A busy year in Boise?

The fun of the hunt
After having our shop for nearly 10 years now a big part of our enjoyment and our most rewarding experiences are when we put customer and bottle together and it works. The customer loves the wine we picked for them! It takes many forms, sometimes it is someone looking for the perfect bottle for themselves on a special occasion, sometimes it is for a gift, and still others is for their go to “Tuesday night wine” that they not only love but has to be priced appropriately for Tuesday.
A wine trip well worth taking
We are very fortunate here in the Northwest to have many wine destinations in our own backyard, close enough to drive to in less than a half day. We recently traveled to Cave B Winery and the SageCliffe Inn near the town of Quincy, Wash. and for wine enthusiasts or those just looking to get away and relax you must add this destination to your list.

Spotting the difference between urine marking and urinary problems
Once pets have learned to urinate where it is appropriate, whether it is outdoors or in their litter box, it can be frustrating for owners when their pet urinates elsewhere in the house. While your first instinct may be to reprimand them for the unwanted behavior, you should first consider if they are simply marking or if there is a bigger health concern at play.
