TODAY: Let Old Glory shine

Our flag flutters and flows, it ripples in the wind. Our flagstaff is steady. Let the flag flourish. Let the gusts bring out the furls. The red, white and blue is beautiful. Our flag is a beacon that shines day and night all over our great land. Let it wave over the land of the free and home of the brave.

Thank you Idaho Rivers United and organizations like yours for protecting our environment and our way of life. Thank you all for suing the Forest Service and the BLM and creating the conditions on our national forest and range lands that allow for catastrophic wildfires.

LEVY: Local $$, local control

Idaho law requires our local school district to seek a levy to fund essential programs and services. State law also requires that this levy be approved only for two years and then it expires. The district is therefore in the tough position of asking the local voters to support another two years of a levy to fund programs and services. This allows for local control of our education dollars and prevents out of control spending. This process is not ideal but it is what we have today.

SCHOOLS: Deserve our support

I am a longtime resident of Coeur d’Alene and my daughter is currently attending the third grade at Dalton Elementary. I would like to show my support for the proposed levy and bond that, without raising our taxes, would assist with the much needed modernization and expansion at her school. Both the levy and the bond are equally important to the future of our communities in equal measure. The levy will provide additional funding to ensure that our schools have access to new and innovative educational programs that will enhance the educational experience of our children. The bond will provide the necessary funding to update our school facilities to match the growth of the student body and faculty, which has grown substantially, as more families move into the Coeur d’Alene School District.

IMMIGRATION: Times have changed

The battle over the wall and open borders continues. One side says it’s all about “Christian love.” The other side claims the same. Funny how both sides innately know that Christian love is vitally important to this discussion. But I am growing weary of hearing the contention that people who think like me “are not acting in Christian love.”

Axe the Tax on Groceries

Government is an overachiever in collecting taxes on nearly everything we do. It’s hard to imagine anything in our everyday life that is not taxed. We are taxed for our homes, our property, our cars, our purchases, our earnings, our investments, and even after death.

There's no room for fear

With the parade, the fireworks, the Fourth of July picnics, and all the celebration of our great nation and the freedoms we enjoy, perhaps there is also room for a little reflection on the current state of affairs in our nation, some of which is not good. Amidst the positive calls for unity, respectful discourse, and working together to solve our problems, there is another negative voice calling out in anger and intolerance for those of differing views and backgrounds. The question arises: Which voice represents the true America, and which will make us stronger rather than weaker?

ELECTRICITY: A different perspective

In response to the letter on March 31 “Electricity: Cost continues to escalate.” I would like to offer a different perspective of Kootenai Electric Cooperative, Inc. (KEC). We operate on a nonprofit basis and are directly owned, governed and regulated by those we serve. Our board of directors are members of the Cooperative who are elected by their fellow members to regulate us. Every decision they make is responsive to the needs of our members. As the general manager, my job is to ensure their directives are carried out.
