Higher density a key part of good growth

From having our kids and grandkids nearer to us and ensuring our stores and restaurants have enough workers to provide what we need, apartments must be part of the long-term solution.

For Flag Day, 2012

In any effort to understand or appreciate persons, nations or cultures there are "known" and "unknown" aspects. There are several old "wisdom sayings" that reflect this: "Still waters run, deep;" "you never can tell the depth of the well from the length of the handle of the pump;" "you can't tell a book by its cover," are some of these. As a way to form some appreciation of these deeper meanings we often use signs and symbols. And we recognize that some knowledge and "reflection time" are necessary to connect the more outwardly "known" with the more "unknown" aspects of persons and communities.

Prepare now for the future

A look back over the 20th century reveals how grand community visions were achieved by local people rallying their support together around future planning. Wherever we find landmark community undertakings, we find involved citizens who were centered on a vision to make their community a more comfortable, sustainable one for generations to enjoy.

Giving thanks for our many blessings

This Thanksgiving I'm especially thankful not only for the good health of our family but for the simple fact we all have roofs over our heads and food in the pantry. We all have paychecks coming in, even if they're less than they've been in years past. It doesn't go unnoticed that there are many in our communities who cannot make the same statements of fact. I'm thankful for ... my nephew, Dallas Scharf and his fellow solders who are spending this holiday on foreign soil in the service of our country .. good friends and neighbors who still dig deep to give to worthy causes and make time to volunteer their time, all in the hopes of making things a little brighter for others not so fortunate ... for our many blessings give thanks.

Idaho's teacher shortage reaching a critical low

Idaho is seeing an increased demand for teachers, but the supply is hitting a critical low and school districts across our state are struggling to fill teaching positions. Given the importance of a high-quality teacher in the classroom and how it relates to achievement, it’s time we begin to find strategies and realistic solutions to an issue that is also getting national attention — the very evident teacher shortage.

Community Spotlight: Ann Johnson

Volunteer Corner

Local Nonprofit Executive Director Ann Johnson has been spotted in our local community giving a helping hand to nonprofits and making a difference in so many ways. Six years ago, Johnson was hired as director of development and marketing for The Village at Orchard Ridge (formerly Coeur d'Alene Homes and Heritage Place). In July 2013 she was promoted to executive director. Around this same time, Idaho Gives was launched by the Idaho Nonprofit Center.

Clothing sales fight human trafficking

There has been no lack of stories about the next generation and how they are walking away from faith and church. There is some truth to that scenario, but other studies show young people hunger to understand the meaning of life and a Christian worldview. Here is a story of some local young women who not only understand faith but also what it means to be a part of the Great Commission to spread the Gospel to all the world. We interviewed a lovely young woman, Gracey Laursen, about a clothing company called Freedombound.

GARDEN TOUR: Nipped in the bud

It is with deep regret that the Garden Club has postponed the Garden Tour this year due to the uncertainties of the current virus. This step is taken out of deep respect for our members and the public in general.

DEFENSE: Keep it strong, America

America’s air superiority is in jeopardy? Our overall national defense is in jeopardy? It is starting to look that way.

COUNCIL: Voters won't forget, part 2

It’s finally time to remove our progressive liberals from our city council and mayorship! Why is it that these people are allowed to run for office without declaring a political party affiliation anyway? Are they afraid that putting Democrat in front of their name will cancel them out? I hope so.

ABUSE: Men, take responsibility

The story of the father who seriously injured his 6-year-old son by striking him in the face reminds us yet again that the most endangered species in our world is our young children.

TESH: House became home

On behalf of the clients, Board of Directors, and staff of TESH, I want to express our heartfelt appreciation for your participation in the "House to Home Community" project presented by FOX 28. The Coeur d'Alene Press' contribution of news coverage and articles helped make the project a great success.

FOURTH: We're free no more

I refuse to celebrate the Fourth this year. We are being stripped of our Freedoms and if BHO gets re-elected there will be no more Constitution. He has spit on it, laughed at it and apologized for it. Anyone who is paying attention will understand and to the others have your party — someday soon you will wake up. We are becoming like any other country and you are asleep.

Our streets, Frazier Drive and Dundee, were “chip-sealed” this summer. The contractor the city used for this resurfacing did a poor job. We wish to file a complaint with the

HONOR: Flight to remember

I recently attended the “homecoming” of the Inland Northwest Honor Flight on April 26. It is a pleasure to witness the joy on the faces of the returning veterans who served our country to preserve our freedom. What they saw on their trip to Washington, D.C., was only a small token of the appreciation and gratitude that we owe them for what they did for the United States of America.
