PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Solutions suggested
Could there be any greater warnings than the status of our Kootenai County public schools? ‘Something is wrong with the System? (Sept. 26 in the Coeur d’Alene Press) Presently, a large percentage of our kids ‘graduate’ without needing to know how to ‘read?’ Most of our kids kids don’t need to know math, and they graduate from our local high schools? Now, virtually every student can graduate and nobody is held back? In spite of this, presently, about 20% of our youth are ‘driven’ to create futures and persevere through Advanced Placement classes and enter America’s universities. This can leave about 80% of our youth virtually unprepared for life.
Improvements proposed for popular Hayden trail system
A newly certified nonprofit, Friends of North Idaho Trails, is taking on its first project - pursuit of a grant to enhance the English Point Trail system in Hayden.
Jerry Ray Tipke, 63
Jerry Ray Tipke, 63, passed away peacefully in his home in Hayden, Idaho the morning of October 28th, 2023. Jerry was a decorated Army veteran who served his country for 20 years on active duty and in the reserves.

“It was a group effort from the coaches, runners and parents,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Cathy Compton, who now has six team titles, four with the girls (2004, 2012, 2013 and 2014) and two with the boys. “It was brutal. But we did everything smart from the warmup and wearing the proper stuff during the race. But these guys are tough North Idaho boys. They’re used to running in this. They’re just tough kids.”

NI STEM robotics team takes on the world
Students will compete against other countries in April
FIRST Lego League robotics enthusiasts from North Idaho STEM Charter Academy will be using their skills for communication, collaboration and innovation as they pursue world domination. The Los Cuatro Amigos team of eighth graders will compete in the 2024 FIRST Championship from April 17-20 in Houston. They'll be pitting their robotics prowess against teams from countries such as India, Brazil and China. “It’s exciting because a team hasn’t gone from our school in 12 years and it’s a big opportunity,” team member Reagan Smith said Wednesday.
