Mitaro Horiya (seated with flag) was a 27-year-old logistics officer aboard a supply ship heading to battle in 1944 when his ship was struck by an American torpedo. He left behind a wife and a 1-year-old son.
The son, Noburu Horiya, now 77, received the flag this year from the St. Maries legion post.
