Jim Kinnard, a Special Olympian from Lake City High School, runs in front of The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Saturday as part of a “virtual” Missoula half-marathon. The actual race, scheduled for June 28, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At left is Kinnard’s dad, Jeff, serving as race support. Running ahead is Carter Gordon, a recent Lake City grad who will attend Lewis-Clark State College and compete in cross country and track and field. Gordon is one of Kinnard’s community support workers, and they often train together. They ran the Missoula half-marathon and Coeur d’Alene half-marathon together last summer. On Saturday, Gordon ran the 13.1 miles in 1 hour, 40 minutes, pacing Kinnard and cheering him on to the finish. Kinnard finished in 2:02. Kinnard is also training with ParaSports Spokane in hopes of qualifying for the USA Paralympics in the future.
