Hand knit a blanket or hat and help a child in need

Project Linus is an international organization began in 1998. Karen Loucks was touched by the story of a very young girl who was comforted by her special blanket while enduring years of chemotherapy. Since it's inception, Project Linus has donated 4,463,213 blankets to children in crisis. Their mission is twofold: to provide security blankets for children experiencing trauma and to provide the community with an opportunity to be involved with helping these children at their time of need.

'Tis the Season for Stress and Emotional Distress

'Tis the season for stress and its sister emotions - anxiety, depression and obsessiveness. While emotional stressors appear to accelerate during this time, there is a need to acknowledge the common denominators between the holidays and emotional upheavals. Although stress itself is a major culprit, more problematic are the choices we make during these hectic times.

Stop all federal withholding taxes

Our leaders in the federal government have no desire to "help the economy." If this was true, our federal leaders would immediately suspend all federal withholding and payroll tax deductions from workers' paychecks. This would immediately put more money in every worker's and every business owner's pocket. This would slow foreclosures and bankruptcies while increasing consumer spending, which would provide more jobs and production that would truly "help the economy." Our leaders can shovel trillions to big banks, but they won't cut loose a single trillion to the citizens and businesses who earned it in the first place.

County Comp Plan; not there yet

We have heard many divergent opinions on the Draft Kootenai County Comprehensive Plan which is to be expected throughout the development of the plan. However, when considering a final draft, one might expect that the scales would be somewhat balanced and that the goals driving the future growth of our county are collectively viewed by most to be a strong foundation on which to build our future. We are not there yet.

The case for Idaho health exchange

An important deadline is looming for Idahoans when it comes to determining what they want and what is available to them for health insurance. A key provision of the new health care law is the formation of health insurance exchanges; online marketplaces where people can research and purchase health insurance. The exchanges are intended to provide a benefit to the citizens of Idaho by simplifying the complexities of the available plans as well as review the applicant's eligibility for Medicaid, Medicare or tax subsidies.

87 percent

Made it, 27 out of 31 days in the month of January with 60 minutes of exercise. Not an "A," but remember perfection is not the goal. Increasing our time frames for exercise and making a commitment toward our health is the goal for the year. And 87 percent is a good start. So how is your start for the New Year going? What is your goal for your kids and family? You need a plan.

The power of vitamin supplements

As we witness the deplorable state of health the people of this nation are in, more and more health-conscious consumers are turning towards alternatives. One of those alternatives is supplements. Vitamins, minerals, herbs and more comprise a multi-billion dollar industry as we search for solutions to our decaying health. Unfortunately, most are using supplements with a drug-like approach, which undermines the power that supplements can really be.

Sen. Crapo wants to hear from N. Idaho veterans

The men and women of our Armed Forces face many challenges as they protect our nation. Because of the unique challenges they face and solemn sacrifices they make, Congress must support the needs of service members both on the battlefield and upon their return. The recent exposure of the mistreatment of veterans seeking assistance through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) again underscores the need to improve the delivery of assistance to our nation’s veterans. The scandals prove that the stakes are high: Congress must get VA reform right this time. As I work with my congressional colleagues to address the needs of our nation’s veterans, the policies I advocate must have a meaningful impact on our veterans in Idaho. In an effort to improve my understanding of veterans’ needs, I invite Idahoans to share their VA experiences with me through a brief survey.
