Elderly people give us joy and wisdom

Last Saturday we loaded up our Alpaca socks, scarves, yarn and teddy bears from our store in Hayden to attend the Home and Garden show featured at the Garden Plaza independent living retirement center in Post Falls. Our host Beverly was very gracious to allow us to be part of this very special event. They have quite a facility for our elderly community members! The best way to describe it is a town within a town. It's much like the Hilton in that you have a top notch place to live with all the amenities (Post office, gym, spa, hair salon, restaurants, activities) which are located inside of the living center area. I noticed how the guests were part of a close knit community since they live within walking distance of their neighbors and do not have to bother going outside or driving. Spending the day with these folks brought back fond memories of times earlier in my life where I spent a large part of my time with the elderly.

With ISIS threat looming, we must stand against evil

It is always refreshing and uplifting to watch the National Memorial Day program on television each year. Patriotism and the spirit of God are at their best. It does, however, point to America's need to conduct a reality check on modern warfare. We are facing entirely different aggressors than we confronted during World War I and II. During those wars, the rules of warfare, outlined during the Geneva Convention of 1864, served as a guide for treatment of prisoners. Today we are facing a faction of radical Islam that wants to impose its belief and laws on middle eastern countries as well as western democracies. There is an urgent need for the President and Congress to set aside political differences and outline a bipartisan plan for addressing the following questions:

Confronting today's threats to independence

Dear Sgt. Hosbrook, though you are my ancestor, I thought it only fitting and proper to address you by your rank and title in that great war for independence that we are celebrating some 242 years later. As an officer in the First New Jersey Regiment of General Washington’s Continental Line, you were well aware of the blood and treasure being sacrificed to break free from a pompous and tyrannical British king.

Other view: We Survive This Crisis by Putting Others First

The American people are the government. They elect it and fund it. That means we cannot simply look to state, federal and local governments as a solution to the coronavirus. We must also look directly at ourselves, our families, our friends, our colleagues, our churches, our neighborhoods and our social circles as the solution to surviving the pandemic intact.

Declare independence over your health!

Perhaps the most fundamental idea in the foundation of our country is that of freedom and independence. One surprising freedom that many of us have relinquished is that over our health. The current state of the health and wellness industry can be extremely confusing and frustrating at times, especially to individuals for whom concrete answers have been elusive.

Are we there yet?

The folks who waited, and waited, for the bottom of the market have, for the most part, realized that bottom has long since passed. The question we are most often asked now is, "How long will the strong market continue?"

Can being too clean cause auto-immune disease?

As auto-immune diseases skyrocket today, we are being vigilant in the search for causative factors. One factor is the role of our environment. Typically, when we think of environment, we think dirt. We are ultra-conscious of minimizing our exposures in an attempt to prevent illness. However, many experts are now questioning: Are we being too clean? Where's the dirt?
