OBAMA: Worried about our president

I was wondering why Obama doesn't seem the least bit concerned about going ahead and doing all the things that displease so many people. Could it be because he's not really worried about running for president again? Because he plans to declare martial law, suspend the Constitution and go after everybody's guns? He doesn't need to win our respect or get our vote with that plan.

ENDORSE: Not public safety's job

Since when does the police or fire department only support a portion of the citizens in our fine city? I find it very distasteful when the police or fire department endorse one candidate over another. Do they not serve all of the citizens of our fine city? In their professional life they should remain neutral and above reproach.

LEVY: Cast vote for the future

Well, it’s time to step up and support our community. March 10th we will vote to support or not to support the supplemental levy for the Coeur d’Alene School District. Whether you have kids or not, they represent the future of our city and country.

THANKS: A safety success story

Hats off to those who are maintaining our roads during this crazy winter weather! I live in the county, just outside the Post Falls city limits. Every morning, I watch in grateful amazement as the snow plow clears our tiny cul de sac — every day, day after day.

MOB: They aren’t ‘adults’

I turned on the news tonight (Sept. 24) and witnessed one of the most disgusting examples of “adult behavior” ever displayed in our community.

MY TURN: Think resiliently, Kootenai

We live in interesting, unprecedented times. A cursory review of recent Coeur d'Alene Press archives reveals an array of concerning headlines: The Rules of War, Adapting to Life with Covid, State Emergencies Due to An Abnormal Influx of Migrants, Economic Uncertainties, and Big Wires: Needed for Electrical Grid System, among other issues.

WAR: Enough already; end it

The continued sacrifice of our boys in Afghanastan is crippling our nation, especially when we are in the worst rececion in 80 years.  It’s time to be fiscally repsonsible and end this costly war.

SOCIETY: Indifference is a serious threat

Thanks to Sholeh Patrick for an article that hits the point of our society today. We’re developing an indifferent personal relationship with each other and it doesn’t bode well for our future.

The Internet: Watching commercial surveillance

At the rate citizens are moving from conventional mail to electronic mail, texting, and instant messaging, it is reasonable to assume Internet correspondence will supplant postal mail as the dominant medium for sending and receiving correspondence.

Pacesetter companies kick off annual United Way Campaign

Volunteer Corner

Since 1957, individuals and companies have stepped up to plan and coordinate the United Way of Kootenai County annual campaign. Back then, the campaign was called the "United Crusade" and included volunteers going door to door asking for donations. While the basics of fundraising are similar, times have changed with how it's done and what the funds are used for.

A new year, and new stars to reach

“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’”

Where the cut really comes from

Working as a payroll bookkeeper in January of this year, our accountant informed me of a Social Security contribution cut, for employees only, approved by the president and Congress for 2011. For months we were hearing moaning and groaning from D.C. about the bankrupt state of S.S. therefore it was baffling to me why a 2 percent cut, from 6 percent to 4 percent in Social Security revenues, was put into place. I questioned the authenticity of such a cut because all we have heard for the past year or so is how desperate the S.S. fund is. This little fiasco, another in a long series of mistakes, cost the S.S. trust account about $111 billion in revenue for 2011.

Remember the Constitution

On May 14, 1787, delegates from the 13 States of the brand new United States began to gather in Philadelphia for a long hot summer of negotiation and compromise that eventually led to the framing and adopting of our Constitution. Some came reluctantly. Many felt that the then current "governing" arrangement under the Articles of Confederation would be more protective of personal freedoms and the principles of the Revolution than would be a more centralized "federal" government.

The family picture we won't send

This time of year we parade our best family photos. Sometimes we’re all neatly dressed, color coordinated and hair fixed just so (even disheveled looks are primped perfectly). Other times we display a menagerie of photos that highlight the year’s glory moments. Our family photos always possess a bit of awkwardness but nothing as uncomfortable as the photo we won’t send out this year…

JUDD JONES: Are you what you eat?

Here’s an interesting question. Are you a chicken, a fish or perhaps arugula or maybe a turnip? Are you someone who believes you are what you eat? These questions may sound ridiculous, but in fact are meaningful and worth your time to consider.
