Your immune system... we can help

A hot topic in magazines, newspapers and in my office these days is how to boost your immune system and strengthen your body in hopes of fighting off infections and disease. It seems many have an opinion as to how to do this. My patients talk about their improved immune systems and research backs up what we are finding to be true. Immune System research shows chiropractic patients have significantly greater immune response.

Christians cast in unfair light bypolitical persecution

In response to Chad Solsvik's recent column, let's start with the first word - memo! Any memo I've received was short, precise, and to the point. None of these normal expectations apply to this convoluted mixture of ideas and topics!

MY TURN: Freedom to read

.As a licensed psychologist specializing in pediatric mental health, it is concerning to see our society in such high distress, with seemingly ever-increasing escalation in anger, hate, conflict, anxiety and division permeating our nation, and our local community. As a nearly lifelong resident of North Idaho, it is heartbreaking to see the loss of civility in our region. Never have neighbors hated and attacked each other as during recent times. Never has there been such a loss of respect and politeness among community members. Our children are watching and listening, and we are letting them down. We have lost our way. Unkindness is ruining our home.

How to keep healthy breasts

Doctor of Oriental Medicine

So much focus is on breast cancer, conventional treatment for breast cancer, and "early detection" of breast cancer via mammograms and self-exams, but little attention is given to keeping them healthy in the first place. We can do much to maintain healthy breasts at home with relatively little effort. It needs to become a lifestyle, not just a thing we do at the moment or when someone diagnoses you with breast cancer.

An internship that defied the cliche of the normal internship

When I started my internship at the Coeur d'Alene Press, my head was filled with the cruel cliches of interns depicted in TV shows and movies. Maybe it was because deep down I thought of them to be true, or maybe I just watch too much television, which is highly probable.

Do you have thyroid problems?

I am often asked what the symptoms are for thyroid disease. There are many. It is important to note that any of the symptoms we will discuss here can apply to more than one condition. Fatigue, for instance can mean anything from thyroid or adrenal deficiency to infection, cardiovascular disease, blood sugar instability, insomnia, immune disorder and probably no less than 1000 other conditions! So it is important to look at the symptoms as a whole - the more of these symptoms you possess, the more likely it is that you have the condition. But that, in of itself, is not a diagnosis. It is imperative that the proper testing be done. Having said that, it is estimated that based on today's common testing, that more than 13 million people are running around with undiagnosed hypothyroidism - and that was a finding in February 2000. It is estimated to be significantly higher than that now.

Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, stroke, arthritis, infertility, gallbladder and liver diseases, respiratory disorders, sleep apnea, insomnia, hyperactivity, fatigue, gout, hypoglycemia, depression, digestive difficulties and other diseases are known to be caused by, or contributed to by sugar. Immune disruption and auto-immune diseases are deepening issues complicated or caused by sugar consumption.

Why autoimmune?

Some autoimmune diseases seem to come on suddenly, and without notice, while others are almost predictable. You can have an autoimmune response to many organs in the body: the brain, eyes, mouth, parotid, spinal cord, esophagus, thyroid, lungs, heart, blood and blood vessels, liver, stomach, kidneys, large Intestines, small intestines, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, vagina, prostate, nerves, joints and skin. I’m sure there are others, but you get the point.

Stop attacking yourself, part one

We are in a strange era. In no other time of humanity, have we been so technologically advanced. We can do some truly amazing things! But with all of our knowledge or theories, all that we have, all that we stake claims to excelling in, we fail to get a hold of runaway health deterioration. Let’s examine one of the most runaway of all health conditions: autoimmune disorders.

Masking pain

Pain affects one-fourth of our population. The typical approach to pain is to mask it. For instance, a person has joint pain. He self-manages it until it’s so bad he seeks medical advice. A diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis is given (for example). Strong medications are prescribed. Now he has new problems: side effects. When these new symptoms become problematic he’s given more medications! The next thing you know he’s in a medication merry-go-round.

The misunderstood stomach acids: Part I

If you are suffering from heartburn or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease ("GERD" or "reflux"), or know of someone else who does, take heart - there are many things you can do to alleviate it. Some people say, "Well, I no longer suffer from it because I take medication. I don't have any problems with it." Well, sorry to say, you have more problems than you realize.
