Interest rates may favor winter market

As interest rates rose in early fall, housing in some areas began to slow and applications for refinance loans became a trickle. Now, with interest rates at their lowest since June, we may see a boost in the lending market and in housing sales. Nearly everyone agrees that rates this low cannot last forever and at least for some, it's "get while the getting is good."

Terroir: The good parts and the not-so-good parts

Terroir is defined as the set of special characteristics of the geography, geology and climate of a certain place that interact with the genetics of a plant, influencing the flavors of that plant. In short, it is what makes wine grapes from one region taste different and unique from those of another region. It is why some of us prefer Syrah from the Rhone Valley in France while others like those from Washington State better, and still others prefer their Shiraz from South Africa.

Sandpoint puts local artists on display

How do you find local artists who live and work in nature and whose work reflects the beauty and harmony of these spectacular mountains? We know they are here, we see their creation from time to time, but where does this creation begin? Eight years ago, one of these artists decided to not only make an appearance, but to create an opportunity for other North Idaho artists to also share the intimate places they live and create. This was the start of the Artists Studio Tour of North Idaho where now more than 30 artists open their studios to the community and invite them to share in the experience.

Reader writes

Even though we encourage feedback from readers with regard to content for this column, we seldom receive it. It is indeed a pleasure then, to attempt to address a number of questions from one particular reader. The reader writes, “What does history teach us about how long it will take for inventory of high-dollar homes to reach ‘neutral’ instead of buyer’s market status?”

LAUNCH: Fee change unsettling

I recently met with a representative of the Post Falls Park & Recreation Department regarding the elimination of the annual boat launch fee at Q’emilin Park (Parks & Rec is now choosing instead to charge each user the full fee each time). When I asked why it was not offered this year, it was stated that it was because they could not guarantee people a parking spot, largely due to the present Avista construction. I then countered that no one has ever had a guaranteed spot, as it has always been first come, first serve. I was then told that the city fields so many complaints from people who think they have purchased a guaranteed spot, that it seemed easier to eliminate the pass than deal with the complaints — which is what this is really about — not having to deal with the public.
