Protect services that benefit the state
Saturday, Feb. 19, citizens gathered in Coeur d'Alene and around the state to let our legislators know how important it is to avoid severe cuts in Medicaid services. I was honored to speak at the gathering, and my message was threefold: protect services that benefit the state, eliminate bureaucracy, and find appropriate funding.
How addictive is sugar?
This week, I am going to be a bit of a buzzkill on all that Halloween candy - and for that matter, the upcoming sugary treats which are always part of the holiday season.
Political parties: Oh, what a mess
The recent political turmoil our nation is facing has forced me to sit down and really consider the political parties, what they stand for and whether they’re necessary.
MY TURN: Open letter to Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra
Dear Mrs. Ybarra, I feel I have no choice but to write to you.

DEBT: Turning into Third World
How could our every state representative and every state senator through the last 12 years let this wonderful country get into such a mess. When Zippergate Clinton was president there was no national debt. Why?
BOARD: Big issues ahead
Congratulations to the victors in the Coeur d’Alene school board election, Tom Hearn, Dave Eubanks and Christa Hazel. Let’s hope they honor their pledges to do what is best for our kids. If they don’t we’ll be there to let them and the public know. Let’s also hope that Christa Hazel is the true conservative she claimed to be in the campaign. If she was truthful, then a conservative board majority should be able to deal prudently with the financial challenges District 271 faces, including bloated health benefits, and the desire to retain the important intangibles that our bus drivers bring to the table.
TAXES: Small shouldn't fall
As we recently had our income taxes done, we overheard a young woman seated at the next desk. She'd started a business this past year, created her own job, and earned about $5,800. Taxes due on her income were nearly $400, and she lacked the funds to write the check.
FLAG: Please, fly her right
I am impressed and disappointed. As I drove to work this Memorial Day to replace our flag and place it at half-staff, I noticed the number of flags that have been replaced with new gleaming ones… I am impressed.
IB: Listen to business leaders
The Committee for Economic Development (CED) is a business organization composed of chairmen, presidents, and senior executives of major American corporations. Their report on US educational needs for the twenty-first century entitled “Education for Global Leadership” (www.ced.org) states:
TEACHERS: Praise community heroes
The Idaho legislature and Tom Luna are not being honest about our school funding and budget.
McEUEN: No time for spendthrifts
Both our own city and country are experiencing the worst economic times since the Great Depression. Despite the floundering economy and its unknown and precarious future, the leadership here in Coeur d'Alene is seriously considering their McEuen Park upgrade project. Soon they will decide whether to obligate the city to a massive public works project which, by their own estimates, will cost 10s of millions of our tax dollars. This expenditure is optional. Our town does not need this new park and can very easily survive by not spending one extra dime on such a project.
EMPIRE: Falling by compromise
Regarding Mr. Green's letter advocating "compromise:" Compromise is EXACTLY why we are where we are. As we wait for the "leaders" to solve our problems, the foundations of this country are so "compromised" that they cannot be recognized, are so "compromised" that they can simply be ignored and are so "compromised" that our enemies can depend on those in power to acquiesce and do the easy thing.
U of I, Tribe partnership is award finalist
COEUR d'ALENE - The University of Idaho is a finalist for the national C. Peter Magrath University/Community Engagement Award.
PEARL: Remember to support America
The year 1941, December the 7th, Japan bombed our whole Pacific fleet, killing thousands of our family members. Then many of the Pacific Islands - Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guam, the Solomon Islands.
LUNCHES: Debt hard to swallow
I have three children who attend school in the Coeur d’Alene School District. The schools offer hot lunch at the cost of $2.55 a day. It would cost our family $7.65 a day to buy school lunch. We chose to have our kids take homemade lunches. My kids hate to take lunches, and want to eat hot lunches like all their friends. So, my kids sneak and take hot lunch.
ARRESTS: May penalties fit crimes
In the Saturday, Oct. 13 Coeur d’Alene Press, it was reported one of the arrested burglary suspects had been booked five previous times since 2010 for theft, drug possession and burglary. FIVE times! Same story with the one that eluded the police officer. If these deadbeats were found guilty for their actions, I’d say the penalty they received did not fit the crime.
SCHOOL: Senior photo policy poor
I’m a senior at Lake City High School, and was very excited to get my senior pictures done. This last summer the district decided to make a rule that senior pictures must be: only from the waist up, no vertical shots, no full-figure shots, head shots can only be 1 1/4 inch from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must only be the senior (no props, animals or other people), and no soft focus.
CHURCH: Sermon's key points
I, too, was in church Oct. 23 and heard Pastor Paul’s sermon about America and the need to vote. This is a very crucial time for us to test our judgment and refine it with the truths and knowledge we have learned from our Bible. The time I speak of is now, just before election day in our great nation.
BINGHAM: Man of action
Bob Bingham is a servant leader who cares about our community. For the last several years, he has invested his time and energy for the betterment of our county. Bob is a man of action. While most of us just complain about issues, Bob actually DOES SOMETHING. When a storm hits and trees block the road, Bob rolls up his sleeves and clears the road for his neighbors. When electricity is out, Bob loads up his truck with supplies and helps those in need.
