How low can they go?

Interest rates dropped again last week to a new record low of 3.67 percent reflecting seven-tenths of a percent of the previous week's record. That represents the sixth week in a row of declining interest rates. Perhaps as a result, a recent survey showed that a majority of homeowners think housing prices will appreciate in the next year. One would have to think that with interest rates so low, housing demand will rise as it has in many parts of the country.

Is tetanus the cause of disability?

DEAR DR. GOTT: A patient bit my niece at work while she and others were trying to restrain her. Afterward, my niece was asked when she had her last tetanus shot; she wasn't sure. Rather than giving her a booster shot, she received antibiotics and dressings for the wound. A few weeks later, her fist began to clench and she had to place a ball in her hand to keep her nails from digging into her palm. She has severe pain in her arm and recently developed cellulitis. Workers' compensation delayed treatment, and she is now classified as permanently disabled. Do you have any knowledge in this area that would help her try to regain the use of her arm?

CHINA: Mixed reviews for trip

My husband and I were in the first group of travelers to leave Coeur d'Alene on the China trip. We spent a night in Seattle and the actual trip started the next day when we were bused to the airport to land in Beijing, China many hours later. We arrived quite tired from all the sitting in very uncomfortable seats, which we were grateful to be out of.

What makes a great restaurant?

I struck a nerve. A few weeks ago I asked readers what they view as important when dining in North Idaho. The response was tremendous. More than 50 of you took the time to express your love, hate, frustration and suggestions for local purveyors of food in our region. Most suggestions were wonderfully helpful as I help guide a local restaurant to regain success while other comments rightfully attack lack-luster, complacent, unimaginative food and service.

Board workshop tackles new school sites

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene School District has optioned property on Prairie Avenue and is going through the due diligence process, said Superintendent Stan Olson on Thursday. Director of finance and operations Chris Shipley said the three contiguous parcels of property on Prairie Avenue appraised at just over $1 million but will cost $1.12 million to purchase. According to district documents, associated costs for the 7.2 acres of land would hike the sales tag to $1.79 million thanks to $150,000 in sewer cap fees, $60,400 in on-site sewer, $50,000 in annexation costs, $46,800 in demolition costs, up to $350,000 for a traffic light, and other expenses.
