ART: Check out the shelf life first
While the translucence of the $110,000 art feature — Allium blossoms — for the entrance to McEuen Park may have been the selling feature for the Coeur d’Alene Arts Commission (Press, Nov. 6), that same translucence may be the bane of its existence and a waste of taxpayer funds, requiring its replacement in two to five years.

Just in case ... Alaskans stocking up
JUNEAU, Alaska - Alaska is known for pioneering, self-reliant residents who are accustomed to remote locations and harsh weather. Despite that, Gov. Sean Parnell worries a major earthquake or volcanic eruption could leave the state's 720,000 residents stranded and cut off from food and supply lines. His answer: Build giant warehouses full of emergency food and supplies, just in case.

DALTON: Power of the people
I would like to tell you about some Dalton people. Back in the ’60s, there was a house fire on the northwest corner of Davenport Street and Hanley Avenue. A pickup stopped. The driver asked me if anyone was in the house. I told him I didn’t know. A man, a woman and two kids lived there. Both doors were locked. He kicked in the back door, went in on his hands and knees, crawled around for about 10 minutes and came back out. He couldn’t find anyone. He was sick for a couple days from the smoke. After the fire was out, no one was found in the house. One dog died from the smoke.

SENIORS: Plenty of help on hand
I read Sholeh Patrick’s column of Oct. 8 in the Press. It was very informative but there was one thing I do not agree with, about seniors being unseen in society today. I am a senior and I find that people are very considerate and helpful. Young men and older men always hold the door open for me. When I ask them in a grocery store to reach something for me on the top shelf they are more than happy to do it. Maybe there is a difference in the East but here I find it comforting to see men and women helping seniors any way they can.
