Cd'A CHAMBER: North Idaho College needs your support this November
Since 1933, North Idaho College has played a central role in driving the health of our region’s economy.
Civil discourse is fully attainable
I want to thank my friend Chuck Malloy for writing about Sen. Jim Risch’s remarks at Boise City Club on Aug. 8.
Ninety percent
Whether it is beer wine or food, what we taste is more accurately described as what we smell. The fact is that the human palate really contributes little to what we taste, limited to four flavors, sweet, sour, salt and bitter are the only flavors delivered over the palate. Ninety percent of what we taste is actually delivered aromatically through our nose and sinuses. What we taste is, in short, what we smell.
Is your Realtor protecting you?
It is a truth, unpleasant perhaps to many, that political influence is important to getting things done in this country. All groups employ lobbyists to promote their agendas to municipalities and legislatures at all levels of government. From humanitarian causes to the goals of industries, if your voice is to be heard, nothing gets attention like campaign contributions. The amount of those contributions is directly related to the number of contributing members of a particular lobby.
God, country; free for the taking?
Seriously, America, it’s time to WAKE UP! It’s our turn to “stand the watch” and guard the walls.
New task force focus: College and careers
As we near the midway point in successfully implementing the 20 recommendations from the 2013 Task Force for Improving Education, it’s time to turn our attention to the postsecondary part of Idaho’s K-through-Career education system.
No reason to wait for safety
I pen this as a member of our community, a father of an eighth-grader, former school board member and a businessman.
Caring for seniors
The greater Coeur d’Alene area has a large senior population, and with North Idaho receiving accolades such as “Best Place to Retire” and “12 Reasons to Move to Coeur d’Alene,” we can probably expect more seniors to come to our area.
Learning lessons from our grand old flag
June 14 is Flag Day, celebrating the 13 stripes and the 50 stars that symbolize our humble beginnings and our growth into one unified nation.
Flying around the hormones: Part I
Gratitude
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s a time of reflection and planning for the new year. I always look back over the past year and see all the good things that occurred, along with all the challenges that lead to opportunities for growth. Our past teaches us things if we are willing to glean from these lessons. These challenges create resilience, strength and courage. I have learned, however, that you cannot stay focused on the past, you must accept it for what it was, live in the moment for the next unique possibilities and commit to a plan for the future.
If there were only one wine
North Idaho needs more civility, less extremism
When I was growing up in Utah, every summer my parents would host an ice cream
MY TURN: Camp Lejeune victims still awaiting justice
Camp Lejeune Justice Act will provide reparations for effects of toxic water

Op-Ed: Former 271 trustees encourage civility
As former school board trustees for Coeur d’Alene School District 271, we are concerned by recent news articles and editorials highlighting local security concerns stemming from safety concerns around school board meetings.
My annual cold and flu prevention tips
Each year for the last few years, I have written a column in the fall to address cold and flu prevention. I like to touch on the various aspects that are not always top of mind to prevent or at least minimize the effects of colds and flu.
Services
FBI: Came through for North Idaho
For all the negative sentiment our government engenders, especially around these parts and including by myself at times, I’m sure glad they had our backs on this one.
EXTREMISTS: Leaders, step up now
This is an open letter to our public officials. Coeur d’Alene Mayor Widmyer, Coeur d’Alene City Council, Kootenai County Commissioners, Kootenai County Sheriff Ben Wolfinger, Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White:
GENIE: He's out of the bottle
Yep, before we let the genie get completely out of the bottle, bolt the windows, bar the doors and pray as never before. We thought we could just crack the lid and let our genie do its wonders while keeping it under control. We thought we could make him our servant. We were wrong; now we are his servants — and he’s a brutal taskmaster.
