CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: Honor for Adams

Kudos to the Greater Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce for selecting my husband and partner for the last 32 years, John Adams, as 2023 Citizen of the Year. We could not be prouder. Together John and I combined our salaries to raise and help through college, all seven of our children in our merged family. It was an interesting and challenging time, but we succeeded.

Yo-yo dieting: Part B

The Skinny on Weight Loss

In my last article I mentioned that it is a fact that our physiology is designed to favor fat storage more than fat loss and that the typical "diet" will allow us to lose weight by reducing calories relative to the calories we burn, and yes we can often see health changes such as lowered blood pressure, lowered cholesterol and lowered blood sugar as a result. But, what have we really lost and will these changes last? What we really lose is fat and lean muscle, organ tissue and hormones once we burn up all our blood sugar and glycogen (stored in the liver and muscles). When we gain the weight back it is generally all fat. This is why yo-yo dieting is so unhealthy.

IB: Demonstrate critical thinking

In the last few months, I and other “patrons” of the CdA school district have researched and studied the International Baccalaureate Program. We as a non-political group are just parents and taxpayers that have demonstrated that the effectiveness to date, of the I.B. program, is vastly outweighed by the cost and its limited success.

Opinion: Choosing unity

For months the minor parties of Idaho (namely the Democrats and the Constitution Party) have sat in the cheap seats, nibbled on their popcorn and watched the dominant Republican Party make a spectacle of wrestling with itself. One match after another of Republican versus Republican filled the fight card: Phil Hart, John McGee, Closed Primary, Presidential Caucus, Proxy-gate, Redistricting Commission, Re-precincting, Richard Mack, CdA Recall, Ron Paul, blog lawsuits. It is yet to be seen if these weak opposition parties can exploit our internal squabbles by making membership and electoral gains, but you can assume they will try.

Community Thanks November 27, 2016

I am writing to share about the gratitude expressed Nov. 19 at our Sons of Norway Thanksgiving Feast at the Jacklin Cultural & Arts Center where we gathered to share a turkey dinner, bringing items to donate to the food bank, Jingle Books and Toys for Tots. I am grateful for these contributions that will continue at our two December events also. As Cultural Director, I organized our program that day and wish to say thanks to the Coeur d’Alene Press for ideas I encountered in your pages which helped me develop several aspects of our program.

TRAPS: It's a statewide problem

We are writing to share our concerns about unmarked traps on public lands in Idaho. We are avid trail runners, who also hike with our respective families year-round in the northern panhandle. Recently, while running on a forest service road, one of our dogs was caught in a steel leg hold trap which was set right on the side of the road and was unmarked or tagged. We were able to quickly seek advice, and then restrain and release the dog with a few unfortunate painful bites to our own arms and legs. Had either one of us been alone, this task would have been nearly impossible.

OPINION: Students call for attention to environmental issues

Since 1881, the Coeur d’Alene Public School District has been providing high quality education to members of the larger Kootenai County area. The district has understood that education must be adaptable; when significant events occur, education undergoes changes. We update our curriculum to ensure that students comprehend pertinent current affairs, equipping them for their inevitable entry into the workforce and their lives at large.

'American way' is not the only way

A short while ago Sholeh Patrick wrote a very insightful and moving piece on the subject of humanity's observance and perception of traditional cultural values. In light of this touchy topic I wish to address our surrounding community, the policing authorities herein and perhaps readers abroad.

Opinion: Whole state must shape education vision

Editor's note: After this opinion piece was submitted Wednesday, Mr. Lanza emailed to say he misunderstood comments from Task Force member Ken Edmunds. Here's what Edmunds wrote to clarify his position: "In the editorial that you are distributing to the media, you incorrectly represented my position. I am concerned the ideas being presented in our (task force) meetings have unrecognized costs. I believe that in order to fund the ideas being presented, we will need to change the historical methods of operating our education system. We continue to talk about education improvement by modifying the existing system without acknowledging that our current model cannot meet our children's educational needs. Your statement that I suggested that we only look for ideas that do not cost anything or are free misses the point."

UNIONS: Hoping for better 2012

2011 marks a tumultuous year for workers' rights. With millions of Americans struggling just to make ends meet, our leaders should be protecting the workplace rights that made our communities and our economy strong, not tearing them down.

DEPOT: Don't buy into a lie

A lady came up to one of our Post 14 members at the American Legion Baseball Tournament at McEuen Field on July 2 with a complaint about Home Depot that immediately caught our attention. She advised that Home Depot employees are not allowed to place an American Flag Pin on their work apron.

BUS: Keep district behind the wheel

The recent article regarding the bus drivers and busing of our district’s students is a huge concern. Our superintendent stated the effects of possible cuts should be farthest from the classroom, well those cuts will be as close to the classroom as you could get considering those bus drivers know some of our children by name, treat them as if they were in their own family. Personally see they get into the school everyday.

MILITARY: Support GI Bill to full extent

Our servicemen and women risk their lives to defend our freedom. The least we can do is provide them with the respect and encouragement they deserve.

AUTISM: Awareness, and love

Panhandle Autism Society is a great resource for families and individuals dealing with Autism. April is Autism Awareness Month. In my house, every second is filled autism awareness. One in 68 children are now affected by autism spectrum disorder. Last Saturday hundreds of people from our community came together to walk for autism awareness. For our family, this is our baseball game, dance recital, or track meet. It’s one of few opportunities we can get together with members of the community to celebrate my son and who he is.

THANKS: Responders there when needed

As the Assistant State Captains of the Idaho Patriot Guard, we would like to express our gratitude for those Idaho State Patrolmen, Fire & Rescue, Kootenai County Sheriff and Timberlake Ambulance who came to the aid of one of our men who collapsed while standing in the flag line honoring Sgt. Moore during the procession Saturday afternoon. Without hesitation there were officers who dropped out of the procession to assist our fallen man. Thank you — we honor you! The gentleman is fine. He was transported to the ER, rehydrated and sent home.

SCHOOLS: Rumors of a Bible discourager

It has come to our attention that a certain counselor in Coeur d’Alene School District 271 is presently discouraging students from bringing a Bible to school, yet has no problem promoting sexual activities and other things by providing preventive measures to students at no extra cost.
