LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

Vote May 16 to re-elect trustees Judy Meyer and Regina McCrea to our Community Library Network Board. Thanks to current and previous boards, we have seven incredible community libraries and three bookmobiles. Our libraries offer groups and classes for children’s story times, knitting, crocheting, Book Babies, Imagination Explorers, senior game days, art, Yoga, meeting rooms, computers and Fit and Fall just to name a few.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

As a Coeur d’Alene resident, I can’t vote for library trustees in the Community Library Network, but I can understand the impact of electing freedom-trouncing people on library services throughout North Idaho. They say they want to protect children but what is really happening is an attempt to control the freedom to read for everybody. Untrue scare tactics and a complete absence of understanding of how libraries run are definitely not characteristics of anyone who should be on a library board.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

Trustees serve as advocates of intellectual freedom. Tim Plass announced his candidacy for the North Idaho College Zone 5 trustee seat in August 2022. In his release statement, Plass noted a need to, “…realign NIC’s direction to reflect the values of the community.” Plass later withdrew his name from consideration with Mike Waggoner receiving the official endorsement. However, he shared this same message as reasoning for pursuing the CLN trustee role. Ron Hartman, while running for the Zone 1 trustee role with NIC provided more clarity during a podcast by stating the college should reflect the Christian values of the community.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Plass and Hanley

Children’s books featuring incest and rape are indefensible. Since they cannot defend such books in the library network they helped build, Meyer and McCrea resort to calling their opponents extremists for wanting to remove this filth from the minors’ areas. Passages newspapers cannot print.

OPINION: Call me crazy

In Saul Alinsky’s Marxist handbook “Rules for Radicals” Alinsky advises that “ridicule is your most powerful weapon.” This seems to be a lesson well learned as evidenced by nearly every Letter to the Editor or comment section which contains some name calling, insults, ad homonym attack, or slur.

HOSPITAL TRUSTEE CANDIDATES: More info needed

In preparing to vote on May 16, I am trying to find out as much as I can about the candidates to make an informed decision on the upcoming election. There is not much out there. I do not know any of the candidates personally. I feel fairly well informed about the school levies and the library trustees due to reading the paper, but what about the hospital trustees, and is it even relevant now that a nonprofit model is being adopted.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

I am the middle child of five — all voracious readers. I remember my mother taking me to the library to get my first library card, right after I learned to read. She did this with each of us, and it was always followed by a family celebration — a rite of passage and an opportunity to avail ourselves of all the knowledge, beauty, mystery and wonder of the world — right from our local library.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

Those of us in elected office all have moments where we reflect upon what it means to be a public servant. For some it’s the appeal of “being somebody.” For others it’s a paycheck, or a commitment to a partisan ideology. Fortunately, there are public officials who serve because they have a servant’s heart. The last category is how I describe my dear friend and role model Judy Meyer and her fellow CLN library trustee Regina McCrea.

A Kootenai County judge reaffirmed her order requiring North Idaho College to reinstate Nick Swayne as the college’s active president. Judge Cynthia Meyer issued a written decision Wednesday afternoon denying NIC’s request that she overturn her March decision, which forced the college to restore Swayne to his job while his lawsuit seeking permanent reinstatement proceeds.

MY TURN: Regan and the Idaho Freedom Foundation insult and undermine voters

Wow, Brent Regan has managed to insult everyone in Coeur d’Alene and more generally in Kootenai County. I am addressing his "Opinion: For the kids screed" from April 14.
