Warm socks make the perfect gift

As the old saying goes, "Cold feet, warm heart," but when your feet get cold, it's hard to feel that jolly this time of year. We have the perfect gift to keep your loved ones warm this winter...Alpaca socks from Alpaca Direct. Our Alpaca socks are the natural choice as a unique warming gift for the feet because they raise the bar on what you can expect from a sock.

Celebrate hand knitting this month at Alpaca Direct!

The contemporary crafter can be anyone - young or old, housewife or executive, rich or poor. Some craft to provide for their loved ones; others seek artistic expression or the comfort of familiar motions. The diverse, growing community of crafters who call our Hayden storefront home in North Idaho is a testament to the near-universal appeal of the fiber arts! For all our differences, though, there's one experience that nearly every crafter shares in common: The joy of providing a "handmade" gift. Each perfectly-draped alpaca sweater shows the world that hand-knit can be far superior to its machine made counterpart. Every teenager crocheting at the park, despite the raised eyebrows and confused looks, proudly announces that granny squares aren't just made by grannies.

Educate our educators

In spite of the sincere efforts of our K-12 educators in the state of Idaho, there is a lack of student mental stimulation, therefore, students are not motivated toward further learning. From my perspective, our teachers have the student’s best interest at heart, and they do the best they can. I suspect the crux of teachers’ failed attempts of producing students eager to further their education, once graduated from high school, lies indirectly with administration. I feel sure the Idaho students, had they received excellent learning skills from K-12 grades, would not be at the bottom of the barrel according to the U.S. educational evaluation system.

FLAG: It's all about history

For my ancestors, the Civil War was not about slavery. My ancestors did not own slaves. They were farmers born in South Carolina who fought to protect their land, their families and their livelihood. Some proudly named their children after Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee. When General Sherman stormed through the South, his armies destroyed property and lives. Much of our family history was destroyed when courthouses in the South were burned by the Union army.

Session helped bolster education

One thing we can all agree on is that we want our children to have a bright future. One of the most important issues the Idaho Legislature works on every year is how to best build and support a strong educational system that will enable a better future for our children. After a whirlwind three-month legislative session down in Boise, I am pleased to report that there were several critical education-related successes that will benefit our Idaho children for years to come. Overall, the Legislature invested nearly $100 million in new funding for education in Idaho and made some policy improvements in areas such as early literacy instruction and assessment, career-technical education, and college and career advising.

Spring critters

As is the case for spring, year after year, while we look forward to our colorful array of flowers to appear, breaking the soil instead are allergies, colds and the flu. The radical changes in weather, combined with lack of sunshine, a more sedentary lifestyle and other factors seem to weaken the immune system and leave us "exposed to the elements."
