Here at Open Arms Real Choices Clinic, we are also eagerly anticipating our upcoming season. Everyone involved — whether it’s the board, the staff, or the many volunteers who serve our organization — is excited for all that God is doing in and through this ministry to support the women, men and families of North Idaho.

Educators have kids' interests at heart

Recently, after a long work day, I joined a group of eight other educators. They came to the table for a rare opportunity. Erin Lenz, Idaho Teacher of the Year, wanted to listen. Given charge of gathering input about the needs, direction, and strengths of our educational system, she asked those in the trenches to speak.

Where has reason gone?

At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Paine wrote and published a series of papers titled "The Age of Reason." Paine's theme was primarily a polemic against organized religion's influence on early American society. Although at that time Paine's postulations were considered heretical and radical, they would be considered mild in this our age of the abolition of reason.

It takes a village to destroy kids' potential

With endless reports that our public education system is in meltdown, you'd think some serious concern would be seen to change the dismal forecast for your kids in the Coeur d'Alene public schools.

LEVY: Don't lose 280 jobs

Unemployment is arguably the biggest challenge facing our nation today. If School District 271's upcoming school levy fails, where will 280 laid-off employees expect to find work?

ART: Tribute to wise city planning

What a delightful surprise, coming upon the cheery umbrella-like flower sculpture in the Kathleen and Fourth roundabout on a gray winter morning! What a colorful and fun choice to plant these “flowers” so near the Coeur d’Alene High School for our young people to enjoy.

PEARL: Don't let memory fade away

Seventy-one years seems to have diminished the importance and the memory of a fateful day for our nation. The coverage of the event, although of significance to Mr. Emory mentioned on page nine of the Coeur d’Alene Press, dated Dec. 7, fails to honor those who perished and to our nation that arose to the threat and devastation of the attack.

AMERICA: Not what it once was

Joe asked me if I would lead the recent Newport High School all class reunion in the pledge of allegiance to our flag which I was very happy to do. I tried to emphasize God and Republic. I led the pledge with serious mixed emotion. Our flag is no longer a symbol of the America I grew up in but is now a symbol of just another communist nation that I fear has destroyed the greatest hope for man kind.

AMADOR: For a better future

As a parent of two children in the Coeur d’Alene School District and an educator in the district tasked with supporting teachers, I recognize the role of education in supporting a bright and positive future for Coeur d’Alene. I want the best for my children, their friends, and for our community. This legislative session, I urge constituents to look past rhetoric from candidates who claim they are education supporters and seek true advocates of education on the ballot. Kathy Sims claims that she supports education, but has voted “NO” on numerous education bills, including the teacher career ladder (HB 571) and children’s reading programs (HB 647). We need an advocate for our children in the legislature. We need Paul Amador to represent all people of Coeur d’Alene — he is a strong supporter of a diverse educational system, has worked with and listened to educators, and is truly focused on improving the lives of citizens in Kootenai County. Paul is also fiscally responsible and will ensure that all funds are allocated appropriately to do the most good for our community. On May 17, vote for Paul Amador for House Seat 4B to support our kids and our future in Coeur d’Alene.

AMADOR: Trust his decisions

Working 40 years as a Rehabilitation Specialist in North Idaho and serving on the Heritage Health, Union Gospel Mission, and Tesh Boards, I realize more and more families in Idaho are struggling with medical costs. Paul Amador, Republican candidate for the Idaho legislature, is the one candidate I trust to make the best decisions to address our medical care issues in Idaho. I have known Dr. Amador for many years and he is both compassionate and rational in his decision making process. He understands that although we have a strong moral obligation to support those who are in need in our community, we must also focus on providing the most effective and fiscally responsible solutions to these issues. I know that he is supportive of solutions like the recently opened mental health crisis center because it serves a very important need in our community and reduces the impact on our law enforcement and emergency medical fac! ilities, which ultimately saves taxpayer money. I encourage you to vote for our future on November 8. Vote for Republican Paul Amador for Idaho House Seat 4B. He is the best choice to represent us on healthcare issues.

This is the first letter to the editor we have ever written.  But never have we felt more love or pride for our community than we feel at this time.  We could not let our gratitude go unspoken.
