OPINION: A Moon waxes as a Luna wanes

The present-day Republican Party has revealed who it really is and it ain’t pretty. Many of us thought that Tom Luna was way too far to the right, but the newly-elected GOP chair, Dorothy Moon, eclipses Luna by a country mile. Moon’s political beliefs verge on lunacy. Moon has given aid and comfort to the ravings of a pillow merchant who claims the Idaho presidential vote was rigged. She told us during her ill-fated campaign for Secretary of State that Canadians had voted in the Idaho elections. To prove it, she said somebody had told her so. Wonder if it was the pillow peddler.

Stress and sleep

I slowly open one eye and look toward the window in my bedroom, hoping to see daylight surrounding the blinds - pitch dark! Frustrated that I again am awake before sunrise, I roll over, readjust my pillow, sigh deeply and close my eyes. I feel a hand on my shoulder and a voice asks, "What time is it?"

Text neck

Modern day technology is having a negative effect on our spine and body mechanics. Think back to 10 years ago, cell phone usage wasn't anywhere near what it is today. Only half or maybe a third of high school students even had a cell phone back when texting was limited to about 200 per month. Nowadays, however, it seems the average age to receive your first smart phone is around 10 years old. Below are some details about the bad cell phone habits the doctors at Optimal Chiropractic see with many patients.

GUNS: Fear and the NRA

NRA guru Wayne Lapierre once gave a most eloquent speech (lol), and stated, “The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!” Well, I’ve been pondering that statement, after the very local tragedy of the 2-year-old and the gun. Some years ago, a similar thing happened at a local market, where a child pulled a loaded gun from under his grandfather’s pillow and a fatality resulted. There was no “bad guy” in these tragedies, but something that should be thought about, from the standpoint of what the NRA once advocated — gun safety rather than gun rights.

What is carpal tunnel?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed between the displaced bones of the wrist. Nerve signals originate in the brain and follow tracts down the spinal cord through openings between the cervical vertebrae in your neck. The nerves then travel down the arm and into the hand. At the wrist, a semicircular tunnel allows the nerves to travel through the highly mobile wrist area. The tunnel is a narrow and rigid passageway of ligaments and bones at the wrist, and contains the median nerve and tendons. The tunnel deforms when there is sprain or damage to the ligaments, allowing the bones to move away from their normal positions.
