Black Friday: Is it worth all the hype?

Black Friday isn’t what it used to be. Once a doorbuster dash by only the most committed Christmas shoppers in the wee hours following Thanksgiving, “Black Friday” sales have stretched from three-hour mad grabs to multi-day specials lasting a week or more.

Wedding trends

The troubled economy we have experienced over the last few years has created a trend in wedding planning and more specifically in wine consumption at the "big event." The general trend that has emerged is couples planning their rehearsal dinners, ceremonies and receptions at private venues like backyards, lakefront homes and the like, which results in couples looking for wine as opposed to that which would normally be provided by the venue. When couples do hold them at a rented location most times they are hiring their own caterers and buying their own wine for the events. In both situations the reasons are the same - trying to make the day special as it should be but with an eye to budgetary concerns.

Nonagenarian dancing to 100

DEAR DR. GOTT: I will be 93 this month and have been blessed with good health all my life. My recent medical checkup was good, and everything was normal. However, during the past year, I have noticed my walking has become somewhat laborious and stressful. Even a small incline on the street makes walking more difficult. I have a little dog, and she needs to be walked.

We made it

Although it was touch and go, the Debt Forgiveness Act survived the fiscal cliff negotiations. This means that folks who are losing their homes will not have to pay income taxes on the money they lost as if it was income. Example; when a home sells for less than owed the IRS considers the balance as personal income even though no money was tendered. Realtors' lobbying efforts to keep the exception to this tax code - which expired Dec. 31, 2012 - intact, at least for the short term were successful. So too, did we retain the Mortgage Interest Deduction which provides some incentive for people to buy and own homes. Caps have limited the deduction for high income families and the MID will undoubtedly be scrutinized as Congress fine tunes their 11th hour agreement. For now at least we can heave a sigh of relief that the slow, but steady, housing market recovery can continue.

The issue of easements

A property owner recently contacted us because he came home to find trees missing from his property. Further investigation revealed that the trees in question had been removed from an easement that had been granted to an adjoining property. That easement was to provide access to an adjoining parcel and because the trees were an impediment to that access, they were removed.
