Senator's journal tracks legislative goings-on
It is an honor to be your State Senator from Coeur d'Alene. Thank you. The legislative session started Jan. 12, and it has been non-stop ever since. What an interesting experience! I'm up at 5 a.m. and don't get back to my rental house until 8:30 p.m. Then we start again before the next dawn. It's challenging but very enjoyable.

Sign of the times: No smoking debated
There may be something new to read at Coeur d’Alene Public Library. “No smoking” signs are destined for outside the library and part of McEuen Park if the City Council approves the measure today.
SCHOOLS: Core of support
I have spent a lifetime working and paying taxes, trying to ensure that in my last years I won’t be a burden to anybody. I am on a fixed income. Luckily, my “finite apple” (retirement income) is larger than some but not as large as many others. Then, along comes the public school district that asks for more every two years taking a bite out of my apple. And then the city, the county and North Idaho College raise or can raise taxes without my vote because, by law, they can! In addition, as the result of new requirements from the Environmental Protection Agency and the need to fix an aging system, my monthly payments for sewer in the Hayden Lake Recreation Water and Sewer District will be increasing 46 percent per month in 2018! (I need a bigger apple!)

IDAHO: Time for major change
Of all states, Idaho ranks 49th in per capita income and 48th in education. We rank 19th in unemployment; the problem is that we also rank 49th with the highest percentage of minimum wage jobs. What have our “conservative” Republicans and our governor done about this mess in the last couple of years?
