VETERAN SALUTE

Happy Veterans Day! Yep, it’s our day to celebrate our service to our country, and remember serving with dedication, courage, and pride. We carry our military traditions into our lives, and enhance society with instilled moral and ethical values. As veterans, we took the Oath of Enlistment, raising our right hand and spoke this:

Reviews

Our enthusiasm for the wines we taste (and as our readers know, we taste a lot of them) shows by what we choose to put on our shelf, in our wine club and in our weekly wine specials — the Friday Night Flights. Additionally, the ones that we really find compelling we write about in our regular review columns. Over time though, we have the chance to try wines in a social setting outside our regular tasting with distributors and other wine professionals. Here are the objective reviews of some of these recent tries.

New favorites and old friends

As is our normal schedule, we have been tasting a lot of wine. It is our job to taste and to continually find new things to include on our shelves, in our wine club and in our weekly wine special, the ‘Friday Night Flights.’ Our goal is to always bring you, our customers, plenty of new choices. Here are some of our recent favorites — a blend of new and some old friends dating back to our time in wine country.

Clarence Olsen, 95

Our dad passed away early in the morning at Creekside Inn on Aug. 15, 2011, at age 95. He was born Jan. 30, 1916. His much loved parents and our dear grandparents were Jack and Olufina Olsen, both from Norway.

America needs to go back to its roots

Women’s rights. Gay rights. Black lives matter. Right to grow, smoke, and sell our own pot. Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. As Americans we love our rights, now our taskmasters. Dependence on government handouts, Internet porn, no-fault divorce, endless litigation, and police-the-world politicians with pat answers yet few solutions are just more rain-less clouds in a prolonged drought.

Realtors give

With the celebration of Christmas and Hanukkah both this weekend is seems appropriate to address the spirit of giving. Your Coeur d’Alene Association of Realtors members have been out ringing bells for the Salvation Army, donating gifts to the elderly and indigent and volunteering in ways we hope will make all our North Idaho communities a better place for all.

NATO had our back; we mustn't turn ours

The United States is at our strongest and safest when we stand alongside our allies. With last week’s North American Treaty Alliance summit in Brussels and this week’s summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, we as Americans should pause to appreciate NATO’s role as a fundamental cornerstone of post-World War II peace and prosperity. Not only has NATO protected European and North American interests from threats like communism and the Soviet Union, but NATO has also continued to protect Western values of democracy, transparency, and freedoms of religion and speech.

Trump's helter-skelter foreign policy endangers our national security

On March 28, a headline on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website proudly declared, “Secretary Nielsen Signs Historic Regional Compact with Central America to Stem Irregular Migration at the Source, Confront U.S. Border Crisis.” The story under the headline told of how El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras would continue to work cooperatively with the U.S. to address the “ongoing humanitarian and security emergency at our Southern Border.”

Why is the Coeur d'Alene City Council insistent on sacrificing our neighborhood on the "altar of more dwelling units at all cost?"

Customer service, something we pride ourselves in at PHD

This week is Customer Service Week, something we pride ourselves in at PHD, and I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the work of PHD staff and volunteers.

CDA: Proof city cares

Being a second generation business owner in this great city, I have been very pleased with the care that has been given to us. The location of our business, Action Printers, is on the corner of two very busy streets — Third and Harrison. We have had several incidences of vehicles wrecking in or toward our building. As a result our employees have been nervous of an impending accident.

VOTE: For strong oversight

In light of the three recent cases of embezzlement in the city of Athol, Cd’A and the chief deputy clerk of the county under Dan English, isn’t it time that the voters recognize we have a pervasive problem with lackluster oversight by our elected officials? It is past time that the voters refuse to elect or re-elect someone who didn’t exercise adequate vigilance over those handling our public money. If we can’t expect our local government officials not to line their pockets or their friend’s pockets with our money, how are we better than Detroit or Chicago?

Souza's statement to community

We have worked very hard to get our message out to the voters, using every means within our power.  Our supporters have offered generous, active and involved help, for which we are incredibly grateful, and we are proud to have been part of the election process in our city.  As Thomas Paine said, “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.”

TRAPS: Certainly not dog-friendly

Is anyone out there listening? Since we are such a dog friendly community, and advertise that, as being one of our assets. Why is it our dogs are being killed and injured in traps set too close to our recreational areas. The solution is easy. Do not set, bait and hide KILL TRAPS anywhere near our hiking/biking paths. Dogs can smell the bait and are drawn to the traps. When caught, all you can do is watch them die. This has happened more often than you realize. Please put a stop to this before a child or adult fall victim to these traps. Thank you.

VETERANS: Bless them, every one

Our veterans have always done the will of the nation, some giving their lives on our behalf. Many are traumatized for life due to the fact that they cannot undo or unsee what they have had to participate in. To put this in perspective, act as if you would voluntarily submit yourself to the worst that mankind has to offer and remain the same trusting person you once were.

RISCH: Stands up for young people

I am writing this letter in support of our U.S. Senator, Jim Risch. I am a sophomore at North Idaho College and I am terrified at the prospect of finding a job after college. Senator Risch is one of the few representatives across our nation that is truly fighting for my generation. He was given the National Taxpayers Friend award by the National Taxpayers Association, and has fought to stop all of our runaway spending in Washington, D.C., keeping our generation’s debt more manageable. Please join me in supporting Senator Jim Risch for re-election on Nov. 4!

GRATITUDE: Garden Club generosity goes far

A huge shout out to the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club for their continual support of the Hayden Meadows Greenhouse. Their generosity contributes to all 500+ students who actively grow vegetables and flowers for the local community, our school gardens, and our local food banks.
