LAUNCH: Fee change unsettling
I recently met with a representative of the Post Falls Park & Recreation Department regarding the elimination of the annual boat launch fee at Q’emilin Park (Parks & Rec is now choosing instead to charge each user the full fee each time). When I asked why it was not offered this year, it was stated that it was because they could not guarantee people a parking spot, largely due to the present Avista construction. I then countered that no one has ever had a guaranteed spot, as it has always been first come, first serve. I was then told that the city fields so many complaints from people who think they have purchased a guaranteed spot, that it seemed easier to eliminate the pass than deal with the complaints — which is what this is really about — not having to deal with the public.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau America’s population is over 327 million. Of those, there are only 27,989 people with the surname Rankin. A few weeks ago, WWII veteran Dan Rankin captured the hearts of just about everyone when the media came calling and shared stories on TV and in print of how for years customers of Dueling Irons in Post Falls had been buying his breakfast to thank him for his service. My Turn: Recovery of the Nuremberg Laws
Today marks the 67th anniversary of the recovery of the Nuremberg Laws. Lest we forget, these documents were signed into law on September 15,1935 by Hitler which made it National State policy to persecute the Jews. Though comprising less than 1 percent of the German population, the Jews were vilified as the source of most of the country's economic and other crises. The following is the never before published story by one of the WWII soldiers involved in the recovery, Sgt. Seymour Golub, as told to his family prior to his death on Nov. 15, 1997.

The best cameras for every budget
NEW YORK - Digital cameras have been popular gifts for a decade, but enthusiasm is waning, as most households already have one. The good news is that if you do know someone who could use a fresher model, it's hard to go wrong: Today's big-name cameras are almost uniformly good buys. Whether you're looking for a simple, compact point-and-shoot or a high-end digital SLR that accepts interchangeable lenses, here's a selection we think stands out from the crowd.
