FOOD STAMPS: Not good here

Welfare: For Ralph and those of you who don’t know, you cannot, I repeat, cannot buy cigarettes with food stamps! Nor alcohol or hot foods (food from deli). There are other things too but I won’t go on.

The Internet: Eroding hard copy and concrete

With the increased use of the Internet for the transport of email, text, and instant messages, it is logical to assume there would be an associated decrease in the transport of hard copy mail. Small businesses make big targets

A local business got a decent-sized order for its product from a company in a Middle Eastern country. The name of the country is not important. What IS important is that orders from any foreign country, particularly if your firm hasn’t done business with the company, should cause you to raise your antenna.

Fraud, scams reaching epidemic proportions

A number of consumers called me during the last week complaining about unwanted telephone calls from sales people, scammers and con artists. Unfortunately, the number of calls to me is almost overwhelming — anywhere between 30 and 40 per week, and you know there are many more who have the same complaints but don’t call me.

Wolfish appetite for cash

It is truly disheartening to see local educators indoctrinating today's youth with one-sided presentations. I commend educator Justin Taylor for getting his students to research, debate and rebut such a controversial subject as wolf hunting as it is here in Idaho. But ...

Power struggle a question of balance

The idea is so counterintuitive, it’s hard to comprehend. Yet counterintuitive, and counter to history, is what the governor is suggesting: Take the key “counsel” out of Idaho’s chief counsel.

What's behind rise of suicide in U.S.

In 1972, I moved from Denmark to Moscow to start my career at the University of Idaho. I fell into a conversation with a student on campus, and I told her how impressed I was with the Danes and their system of government. She countered with this assertion: “Welfare states cause people to kill themselves more often than other countries.”
