Gas prices are silver lining as economy weakens

There's some good news behind the discouraging headlines on the economy: Gas is getting cheaper. At least two states had stations selling gas for $2.99 on Friday and it could fall below $3 in more areas over the weekend.

Realtors concur, market is improving

Last week at The Coeur d'Alene Resort more than 220 Realtors converged to conduct the business of the Idaho Association of Realtors, participate in continuing education and network with peers from across the state. In conversations with these Realtors we gained a "boots on the ground" perspective from all corners of the state and communities of all sizes. The consensus? "The market is improving." Many lamented their decreasing inventory and told stories of multiple offers on well priced listings, much the same as we have seen locally.

Of price points and tariffs

Recently the Trump administration announced sweeping tariffs on European wine that will almost certainly trickle down to the retail market place. While the effect will become clear in the coming months, not all countries or categories of wine will be affected equally. Exempt from the tax will be wines from Italy. Wines from France, Spain and Portugal will be impacted, but with varying degrees. Also exempt is French Champagne and other sparkling wines from France, and any of their wines over 14% alcohol. Similarly, wines from Spain and Portugal that are over 14% alcohol are also exempt. Also exempt are any wines bottled in large formats.

Market still improved

Sales of bank owned and short sale properties continued their decline through the first quarter of the year. Our year to date sales of foreclosed properties as of the end of March in 2013 were 28 percent higher than this year. Short sales - where a seller sells for less than is owed without going to foreclosure - are down 24 percent.

Experts see trouble ahead

Double dip recession a possibility

CERNOBBIO, Italy - Is the global economy out of the woods? Looking for long lasting relief from head and neck pain or tension? You're not alone

Millions suffer from head and neck pain or chronic tension symptoms and have long sought after lasting relief from physicians and others without lasting success. Many have tried over-the-counter solutions, home remedies, epilepsy drugs, and even narcotics, all of which end up providing little relief in the short-term. Self-indulgence during the holiday season

Food for Thought

Waking up at 3:30 on a snowy Friday morning, my daughter and I hop into the family sleigh and head to the shopping mall to watch the mayhem. Nursing self-induced stuffed bellies created from roasted turkey and pumpkin pie consumed the night before, our focus is not on food but on coffee.

Why sale of Avista is cause for alarm

Steve Cameron’s column “Pull the plug on Avista merger hysteria” in the June 28 Cd’A Press was written in a vacuum and does not reference the facts of the issue. No one knows who the unlisted owners of Hydro One are. Canadian law does not require their full disclosure. Oh, we know the referenced firms, but who are they? U.S. law states that they must be exposed, yet to date they have not been. Many believe that they are Chinese!

Market movement continues

March statistics are complete and the pace of 2010 single family home sales continues to outperform previous years. As the table clearly shows we have surpassed both 2008 and 2009 year to date in number of sales. This renewed activity is welcome news to many of us although our average prices still languish below those previous years. Overall, our single family home price is still off 5 percent from the same time period in 2009.
