The proper role of government

What should be done by government and what should be done by private enterprise? The Founding Fathers wrestled with this question. Our Declaration of Independence articulates that our Rights “are endowed by (our) Creator” and “That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men.” The preamble of The Constitution tells us its purpose is to “establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty.” These, therefore are the reasons our government should be focused on these tasks.

CAMPING: A proposal for Idaho

I recently read the article in your paper about “Dispersed Camping” being offered in Montana. The article describes dispersed camping as an alternative area for people to camp when campgrounds are full. Often this area may not have a picnic table, fire pit, water, or toilets available, but it is still a place to rest your head for the night. This sounds like a great idea to me. Why not offer this option here in Idaho?

Conservatives can't derail Export-Import Bank

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government's vehicle for promoting U.S. export sales survived a challenge from conservatives Tuesday with a Senate vote to renew the charter of the Export-Import Bank for three years. The vote, coming after the Senate rejected amendments to weaken or kill the bank, sends the measure to President Barack Obama for his signature.

Homeless face could be yours

Local. Suburban. The first word describes the vast majority of North Idaho's homeless population. The second has become the biggest growth category in poverty and homelessness nationwide. While in general homelessness is down locally (no doubt thanks in part to the coalition of local charities, businesses, government officials, and agencies of the Committee to End Homelessness), family homelessness persists nationwide, and suburban poverty and has risen significantly since the recession - many of these former middle class homeowners. Both facts elicit surprise.
