REFORM: Thanks, but no thanks

I have been hearing the word “reform” so much lately — it appears to be a favorite of liberals and the far left and I suspect, most Democrats are OK with it. It seems to have started about eight years ago. I believe Barrack Hussein Obama used it heavily in his first campaign and it was very effective — he became president — and our country and the world changed in a way that we could never envision, even in our worst nightmares. Now as I listen to Hillary and Bernie — again — it is all about “reforming” our country — the rich have become even richer and the poor are “entitled” (where did that word ever come from? Must have been a liberal — they use it a lot!) to some of that wealth. Never mind that most of those rich folks have been working their tails off — for forever. And never mind that the top 20 percent already pay about 80 percent of all taxes and the bottom 50 percent pay no taxes at all and are recipients of much of that taxed income. I’ve got news for President Obama, Hillary and Bernie — they are right, the rich are NOT paying their fair share — they are paying FAR MORE than their fair share. How about letting some of that 50 percent have a little skin in the game. Then maybe all of this free stuff would come partially out of their pockets and not all out of mine! Oh, I know, I didn’t really earn it anyway. Someone else did it for me!

Our beauty is being chopped away

Our beauty is being chopped away

Enough is enough. As a local resident with deep roots, I am just constantly sick to my stomach as I watch new residents and longtime residents who just don’t care anymore. Also many, many businesses cutting down our city’s majestic fir and pine trees that have been part of the beauty of Coeur d’Alene for hundreds of years.

Different sides of medicinal gardening

As we are looking forward to the spring and summer months, we begin contemplating our gardens. We want beautiful gardens, but we want functional/edible gardens as well. Can we have both? We can!

Cd'A: Not an idol, but idolized

I didn't want to write this. Really. I tried my best to ignore Ms. Heilman's attack upon my city, my countrymen, Western civilization, and Christendom, but my conscience eventually got the better of me.

Keep kids warm with alpaca knitwear

Winter is almost upon us, and I hear that it is going to be colder than last year with a more than average snowfall. For those of us with little ones in our lives, this gives us a chance to help keep them warm through the winter.

Idaho's broadbandinfrastructure challenge

My Turn

The Idaho Legislature is facing a number of critical issues it will need to address in the next legislative session. But while topics such as Medicaid expansion and transportation funding grab all the headlines, they should not overshadow one of the most critical challenges facing our state today - access to broadband.

Time for action is now!

"The cornerstone of the Republic, as with all free enterprises, is the respect for and obedience to the law… Where we permit the law to be defied or evaded by rich men (or women) …we are increasing the chances of a system in which there shall be violent alternations or anarchy and tyranny." — Theodore Roosevelt

Basic civics knowledge goal of this legislation

While love of country is still very much the dominant sentiment in the United States and certainly within the state of Idaho, such patriotism does not always translate into a love of our political and civic traditions and the history of the institutions that make our country unique. In fact, study after study seems to suggest that an astonishing percentage of citizens don't have a basic knowledge of civics that enables active participation as a citizen. As such, we find that key measures of citizen engagement - most notably voter participation - are in decline.

Uncertain financial times call for careful planning

Uncertain financial times call for careful planning

As the majority of states face large budget shortfalls this year, Idaho is an exception. Our state is one of few in the nation that projects a surplus, which means that we will have a bit more revenue coming in than we anticipated (whether we have as much revenue as we need can be debated).

Stewardship of our waters and adjoining lands

Stewardship of our waters and adjoining lands

North Idaho’s waters and their adjoining lands are truly one of our most precious treasures. What have we done to deserve these gifts? They were here long before us and it is up to us to ensure they remain for posterity. Have we been good stewards ensuring they are and will remain for the benefit of all peoples, including those tourists who seek even for a brief moment to share in their pristine beauty? Have we been responsible and caring stewards of these treasures, or have we become careless and allowed them to be sold off to the highest bidder for the limited enjoyment of a privileged few?
