Conditions right for market, for now

They did it again. Last week mortgage rates set a new record for the lowest rate since 30-year fixed rate mortgages came into existence. That's good news for those who want to borrow money and can qualify. We all know that banks have been remarkably critical when reviewing borrowers' qualifications - a sharp turn from the mirror fog testing that preceded the real estate feeding frenzy of last decade.

Buy producers, not vintages, but...

This past week we hosted a dinner at Fleur de Sel in Post Falls featuring wines from Kermit Lynch imports. The featured wines were mostly from Burgundy and featured some of the very highest end bottlings including Grand and Premier Cru selections from some of the most storied producers in this most storied of appellations, including Meo Camuzet, Jobard, Roulot and others. The wines were outstanding; Laurent Zirotti's food as always was impeccably prepared and artfully matched to the wines. The evening was in short a rare and truly special event, even for us as wine professionals we very rarely get to taste wines of this caliber and price point.

The future of wine pricing

For the first time since we opened the shop 12 years ago there are many forces at work pushing wine prices higher. Forces that go beyond the normal ones of supply and demand, good vintages with large harvests and challenging years with low yields, and the normal ebb and flow of consumer demand for certain varietals, or appellations. Both on a global scale and right here in our own local area many factors are at work to change the wine marketplace and influence pricing.

WinEconomy semi-annual update

It has been about six months since I wrote about pricing and supply trends in the wine industry so I figured it might be a good time to update wine consumers on those trends. When we last wrote retail prices for wine were coming down quite relentlessly due to an over-supply and the general economic trends in the country.

Looking to Europe

We have written many times recently of the troubled 2010 and 2011 wine grape vintages here in North America, and while there are exceptions many of the wines we have tasted are not very good. Recently we have tried the 2010 Skylark Pinot Blanc and the 2011 Skylark Pink Belly dry rose and have found both to be exceptional. Similarly the 2010 Josh Cabernet and 2010 Pennywise Pinot Noir have been very good, and there are others too that appear to have either been picked prior to the harvest time weather woes, or have come from vineyards that were so tightly and expertly managed that the wines are still very good.
