Rethinking the garden

Food for Thought

I've been thinking. "Why am I struggling to find happiness in my happy world?" I have a kind, smart and beautiful wife, the world's coolest kid and spectacular grandchildren. My parents are still alive and love me dearly and I love the work I do in my professional life. I have the summer off (yes, three months of vacation) and get to golf, fish, camp, rock-climb, hike, garden, cook and visit with the people I love as often as I wish. So why am I struggling? Because summer took a vacation!

How many 'dog days' have we had this summer?

My Garden Path

It's kind of hard to call this August the "dog days of summer." Seems like we've been having them over and over since early June. You are to be congratulated if you've managed to keep all your growing things green this summer. Give yourself a big pat on the back! And give thanks that we haven't run out of water ... yet.

Things that I cannot change

A while back, my little cousin Kassy, whom I adore, turned 5. For her birthday she got a helium birthday balloon that had Miley Cyrus on it. As I walked out on to my parents' porch, I watched as she gazed, mesmerized by the likeness of a young girl with make-up, done-up hair, tight pants and a low-cut blouse. "You are so beautiful," she told the balloon. My stomach sank.

Dogs and the people who love them

Since adopting a young Yorkie on our 24th wedding anniversary in March, it's like having a four-legged toddler in the house. I took Annie to the Dog d'Alene event in downtown Coeur d'Alene on Saturday for a little canine socialization. What a fun time with dogs of every size and the people who love them.

Nurturing a friend

Scout and Scarlett run wildly in the yard on this late June morning. Hearing a change in the intonation of their bark, I know something is wrong, quickly put on my robe and head to the back door unsure of what I might find. Howling, panting, jetting from one side of the yard to the other, then bouncing on their front feet at my garden gate, I see the focus of their attack. A large whitetail doe is in my fenced garden, eating the soft tops off my tomato, squash, carrot and pumpkin plants.
