We support the Cd'A school levy

On March 12, voters in Coeur d'Alene School District 271 will be asked to approve a Maintenance and Operations property tax levy to fund 20 percent of the school district budget. We firmly support passage of the levy and encourage community participation in voting YES. That said, the amount of the levy is still too low since it does not fully fund even the current needs of the District.

As we look back on 2013 we must begin with the third quarter of 2012 as our starting point. November of 2012, interest on real estate loans hit an all time low and aided our recovery as market-wise buyers realized that rates were not likely to go lower. These interest rates would hold, hovering below 3.5 percent into early 2013.

Osteoporosis: The quality of the stick

The quality of our bones has been a subject of concern for several decades now. Our focus seems to always be on bone density. What seems to be ignored is bone quality. I like to compare it to a stick: a green stick is flexible and gives when it is bent and bounces back more easily. This is healthy bone; quality bone. A brown, dried up stick when bent will snap. It takes much less force to break it than does a green one. This is unhealthy bone – osteoporosis, or bone which has been forced to be unnaturally more dense (via drugs).

My view from the street

The 2016 election has divided families, friends, and country into hostile camps of warring zealous devotees and opposition unbelievers. We shout and brandish fists across a deepening, widening chasm. We’ve lost all capacity for civil, reasoned discussion or compromise. We insult “enemies” who are our family members, our friends and neighbors, our community. We become “unpatriotic," and “un-American," because of political disagreements.

I regularly have people coming to me with digestive disorders. Heartburn, reflux, IBS, ulcers, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, colitis, constipation, persistent diarrhea, etc. I love treating digestive disorders because when we straighten it out, it’s amazing how many other health maladies straighten out as a result. One question I frequently ask is “Do you have teeth in your stomach?” That generally results in a widened expression or a chuckle. But so many people act like they do!

Discrimination hurts Idaho's economy

Last Tuesday, Gov. Otter told the Idaho Press Club that he didn't think Idaho's anti- gay reputation hurts business in Idaho! It isn't true. Discrimination does hurt Idaho's economy. It doesn't just hurt the people being discriminated against, Gov. Otter. Discrimination, and the negative reputation it gives to Idaho hurts the ability of our businesses to compete in a challenging economy. Discrimination hurts every hard working Idahoan who is trying to make ends meet.

With autumn just around the corner, our store customers who knit have been keeping busy through the summer months on projects for the holidays and charity projects we help support throughout the year. We're always setting goals and sharing stories around the knitting table. Some are huge goals like our knitter Mary Ford, who completed the Coeur d'Alene Ironman along with her husband Jim. Others are focused on learning to knit socks or picking up the challenge of a hand-knit sweater. Setting goals and sharing time with others is key to a healthy lifestyle.
