FLAG: An inspiring work

I would like to thank you for Thursday’s wonderful article on our flag by James F. Burns. This should be sent to every American so we remember what an honor it is to stand with your hand over your heart and give respect to our flag!

We, Charleda and Maralee Foss, wish to extend our thanks to the Hall of Fame Committee for our nomination and acceptance into the Hall of Fame. It was wonderful to meet with many friends and former students.

DEFICIT: Military must be targeted

We cannot seriously address the budget deficit without cutting the military budget which takes up 59 percent of the discretionary budget. I implore both the commission and our incoming Congress to have the courage to make real cuts to our military budget instead of sacrificing crucial spending on human needs.

PRESIDENTS: A common thread

What do Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump have in common? No not that. They are on my list of great presidents because they have made our country better because of their accomplishments and their love of our country and its people.

CITY WORKERS: Thanks for the service

We are on Pennsylvania Avenue. Today we watched our dedicated city workers, in the frigid morning, pull our leaves into the street so they could be scooped up.

Let’s give back to our local nonprofits

I. Last year during Idaho Gives area nonprofits joined together for a block party at City Park where there were carousel rides, museum tours, a volunteer fair, and a cornhole tournament. The plan was to continue this tradition of camaraderie and community connection, but the world has changed and nonprofits must fundraise and communicate with donors differently.

Knit and Fit at Alpaca Direct

Every Tuesday night from 6-8 p.m., we have an open knitting night at our yarn shop in Hayden. This is a time where local knitters help each other with projects and get a little break from the weekly demands of work and home.

This foundation is all about community

The Idaho Community Foundation is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. During that time we've touched the lives of tens of thousands of Idahoans - those seeking help and those offering it. Thanks to our generous donors and fund creators, we have provided grants to a miniature therapy pony in Lemhi County who needed a new trailer so he could continue visiting ill children and homebound senior citizens, and a food bank in tiny Oldtown (pop. 200) that provides a food safety net for people in north Idaho that includes fresh produce from local gardens and pet food for dogs and cats. We have touched literally every community in Idaho.

'Fix the Debt' campaign comes to Idaho

With the election season moving into higher gear and a “fiscal cliff” on the economic horizon, the American public will be hearing more and more about the crushing debt our country faces. As it happens, Idaho is extremely lucky to have two Members of Congress, Senator Mike Crapo and Representative Mike Simpson, who have been spearheading a growing, bipartisan charge to tackle the issue.

On human rights ... and wrongs

During this local political season, it is important that our communication with one another be characterized by a firm allegiance to honesty, integrity, and truth. As a local pastor, I decry sins of the tongue - slander, gossip, lies, outbursts of wrath, false accusations - all dishonor our Creator and defame others who are made in the image of God. It is my desire to speak the truth in love.

A colorful plate is more than just eye candy

Everyone loves a little eye candy from time to time. But when it comes to our food, a colorful plate isn’t just a “pretty face.” We are not talking about colors like red dye No. 40 and blue dye No. 5, but the vibrant rainbow of natural colors found in fruits and vegetables. Here are five reasons why saying yes to a variety of colors every day is also saying yes to good health.

Thanks, Cd'A friends of the humanities

On Sept. 8, the Idaho Humanities Council hosted a sold-out dinner and lecture at The Coeur d’Alene Resort by Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. The IHC’s 13th Annual Distinguished Humanities Lecture drew a record 650 guests, and the next morning Dr. Goodwin met in assembly for an hour with 300 Lake City High School students before flying home to Massachusetts. It was a big night for the IHC and a memorable couple of days for the Coeur d’Alene community, and it would not have been possible without local support of longtime friends, educational institutions and corporate leaders — including the generous support of this newspaper.

Markets stall

Reports from several national sources were seen and heard last week announcing a bad first quarter for housing. An article on Friday in Business Week stated in part, "Sales of previously owned properties tumbled 7.5 percent in March from the previous year, to the slowest pace in 20 months."
