McEUEN: Council only should vote
City Council is elected to make decisions for the city; therefore, it is important that council members make the decisions regarding the future of McEuen Park. City Council members are elected to represent the community and make decisions in the best interest of our city. Representation does not only happen during council votes, it also happens during the long hours council members spend at meetings and talking to people to learn about the issues and it happens when council members ask questions that concern us all. Because council members spend all this time hearing the different sides of each issue and have background information about how the city operates, they are in a much better position to make good "citywide" decisions than individual voters.

Thank you, IB teachers
I am a parent in the Coeur d'Alene School District. My kids attended Lake City High School and participated in IB courses there, and I mourn the passing of that challenging, controversial, thought-provoking program.
STUDENT: She's a teacher, too
A young lady, Danielle Curson of Dalton Gardens, authored a Letter to the Editor published in the Coeur d’Alene Press on Friday, May 3. I have never met Miss Curson, but I immediately found kinship with her in reading her letter. I wish to compliment her, thank her and put forth a few thoughts of my own.
EVIL: Reject it as Americans
Sept. 11, 2001, killed more people than the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. At 9-11, most causalities were civilians; in both they were just ordinary people going to work. Fourteen years later and the evil in our world has increased. There is an inherent evil growing in the world today. It has attacked the Middle East, United States, Russia, the European Union, Africa, Canada, Australia and most peaceful allied nations. This evil kills the innocent and shows disrespect toward life and freedom. I ask, what can you do?

GRATITUDE: For unknown good Samaritan
On Thursday, July 27, about 10:45 a.m., my husband, myself and our 4-year-old son were riding bikes on the trail around Riverstone Park. We turned down a hill (we hadn’t been in that area in quite a while and I wasn’t expecting it to be so steep) and our son got around us before we could catch him and sped on down, panicked, didn’t brake, and it was the scariest moment of our lives. There was nothing my husband and I could do to stop him at that point. It was a gut-wrenching helpless feeling knowing he was about to be hurt real bad and that we had failed to protect him. He had a helmet on but it would have only saved his head. It would have been bad.
Idaho must stand against white nationalism
Idaho’s extremist Lieutenant Governor, Janice McGeachin, disgraced herself, the office she holds, and our state yet again by speaking at AFPAC last week.

As a pastor and member of this community, I am saddened by the harassment of students from the Coeur d'Alene Tribe in McEuen Park this past Wednesday.
Easton lawsuit not the answer
I'd like to add my voice to the discussion over the proposed swap of Camp Easton for property on Windy Bay. I am an Assistant District Commissioner in the Old Missions District for the Boy Scouts of America. I have served as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts in several different capacities since moving to Coeur d'Alene seven years ago. As a youth, I attended and worked at Boy Scout camps in southern Idaho. Thus, I don't have a long tradition at Camp Easton as many in our community do, but I share a love of this great asset to the program. My concern is for Camp Easton's future. My son is 3. I want him and his sons and the generations after them to have a great camp experience when they are old enough to be Boy Scouts.
Pastor: Stewart revives national stigma
Dear Mr. Stewart,
Time to vote - don't sit this one out!
Hard to believe, but the Primary election is on Tuesday. Back in January, we said our goal was to share more information in this space about the voting records, policy positions, and statements made by our region’s elected officials serving in the Idaho Legislature. We also wanted to motivate all voters to become part of the primary election process. A number of candidates are elected to public office during the Primary because they face no opposition in the November General election.
Is it sweet?
Sweet wine versus dry wine is one of least understood and potentially most confusing aspects of wine. Much of this comes from the way our taste buds and our brain work together. Fruit is sweet. Take a bite of most any fruit — from berries to peaches and apples and even citrus — and the unique flavors of the fruit register in our brains through our taste buds, but the sugar content of the fruit registers also. In fact, human taste buds only register four flavors: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. Smell a freshly cut peach, though, and many of the same “flavors,” including sweetness, register in our sense of smell. The short version is when we smell or taste fruit, our brains go to sweet.
We owe huge debt to Vietnam vets
Today is National Vietnam Veterans Day, which was established by President Obama on March 29, 2012. The president’s call was to “… reaffirm one of our most fundamental obligations: to show all who have worn the uniform of the United States the respect and dignity they deserve, and to honor their sacrifice by serving them as well as they served us.”
