GRATITUDE: Garden Club generosity goes far
A huge shout out to the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club for their continual support of the Hayden Meadows Greenhouse. Their generosity contributes to all 500+ students who actively grow vegetables and flowers for the local community, our school gardens, and our local food banks.
MY TURN: Standing against hate in our community
The recent incident at McEuen Park, where students from the Coeur d’Alene Tribe were racially harassed, is a stark reminder of the work we must continue to do to foster a community of respect and understanding. Hate, in any form, cannot be tolerated. It is not just an attack on individuals but an assault on the very fabric of our community.

It’s more than obvious we are living in historic times. Unfortunately, historic times are usually not tranquil times. Here in our beloved Kootenai County, we have recently experienced a spate of tumultuous events, including the racial incident involving the Utah Women’s basketball team, the arrest of an 18-year-old man on terrorist suspicions, a politicized defamation trial, and most recently, another racial incident, concerning the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Do not let our School District be held hostage to the political divisiveness we’ve seen in West Bonner County School District and the NIC board. I have lived in the Silver Valley for 50+ years. I support our public education system and the very dedicated and hardworking employees in School District 391. It’s easy to take for granted what you have until you don’t have it. Democracy, public education, and public libraries are just a few of the systems that serve all of us and are crucial to the functioning of successful communities.

SPORTS OFFICIALS: Deserve respect, gratitude
All three of the schools in our wonderful community have excellent sports programs. All of the coaches, parents and players get a lot of recognition for their support and hard work, but the real heroes of every game, match or tournament are the officials. They make each and every game possible for our sports programs, but they do not seem to get the recognition they deserve.
COUNTY PARK and REC PLAN: An urgent need
I am writing to express my concern about the lack of a comprehensive park and recreation master plan in Kootenai County, a critical issue highlighted by the recent rejection of the open space bond proposal on Nov. 7. While I voted against the bond proposal due to the absence of a publicly supported plan, I commend our Board of County Commissioners for putting the matter to a vote.
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: A national crisis
Our Panhandle, a rather unique shape, is a beautiful part of this world. One of the primary reasons is our people who call this land home. My experience living here since 2001 is that folks are glad to be right here. People here are chill. They like/want to be here. As we grow, we welcome those who want to embrace who we are and what we have to offer. Take time to listen and assimilate.
NEWS: Garbage in, garbage out
As a lifelong resident of Coeur d’Alene, I think I speak for many when I say, I wish I could flip back the calendar a decade or two. A time when people held doors for each other, visited in line at the DMV and made their kids mow the lawn. We held our politics closer to our heart and managed family dinners where we had differences of opinion. I could go on and on.

As a lifelong resident and someone who has been deeply ingrained in our community for over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside exceptional individuals who have dedicated themselves to bettering our community. These are the individuals who have tirelessly served in various capacities, contributing to our nonprofits, Chambers of Commerce, and economic and workforce development organizations. Their commitment and passion for our community’s welfare are unparalleled, making them the ideal candidates for Precinct Committeeman.

MY TURN: June is for gratitude and humility
One of the ironic consequences of the promotion by politicians and educators of their version of diversity, is that our cancel culture has abandoned the beautiful and many-faceted history of our region in particular, and our country in general. Ironically, progressives scream for diversity and inclusivity, but this is defined by what they deem worthy of inclusion, meanwhile severely limiting or denigrating any appreciation of our rich (and truly diverse) history and culture.

GRISSOM, THOMPSON: Good for Lakeland students and parents
Election day has come and gone and that warrants some reflection. As a mom of three in the Lakeland School District, the election of our school board trustees had my attention. What direction would voters want our community headed in? In 2019, Ramona Grissom and Michelle Thompson were elected. During their four years on the school board, these two trustees helped to re-open the schools in the fall of 2020 without face masks, worked to keep our schools focused on education and advocated for parental rights.
FREEDOM TO VOTE: Not in presidential primary
Writing to Pat Bethke’s letter regarding freedom to vote rather than appoint people. For some positions appointing qualified, responsible people in non-political positions is better than following the Brent Regan and Associates choices. The KCRCC and the state Republican party have taken away our freedom to choose who can participate in the Primary in May.
