La Niña to be declared soon as ocean waters cool
December has been a tough month for snow across the lower elevations of the Inland Northwest. Moisture totals have been below normal as Coeur d’Alene has received over 1.50 inches of rain and melted snow through Dec. 21. The normal precipitation in Coeur d’Alene for December is 3.90 and with additional storms expected this week and through the end of the month, there is a chance that we’ll come close to that figure.

A new vent found in Yellowstone
We know that a supervolcano, Yellowstone, is located practically in our backyard. The region is constantly going through geological changes, as there was a recent discovery of a new volcanic vent in August 2024.

A Western volcano could erupt soon
When most of us think about active volcanoes in the U.S., Mount St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and a few others will first come to mind. However, one of the most active volcanoes in the region is about a mile underwater and approximately 300 miles off the U.S. western coastline.
