A wildland firefighter from the Coeur d Alene River Ranger district uses a drip torch for prescribed fire. Prescribed fire operations for Idaho Panhandle National Forests started Friday. The work is expected to continue through the spring as weather conditions allow. Prescribed fires are used to reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
