Elected leaders sound off on hopes for 2024
OPINION: A letter of thanks
As another school year winds down, we reflect on the tremendous growth and progress our students, teachers, and staff have achieved. It’s always a bittersweet time as we say goodbye to our students for the summer. Many will go off adventuring at the many camps offered around our region, spend time with family, experience first-time summer jobs, and for our seniors, the beginning of the next chapter of their young adult lives. We are proud of our students and staff and are grateful for their hard work. It won’t be long until we welcome a new group of learners to the district along with our returning students, and we look forward to that!
OPINION: Bringing facts to the levy discussion
Last month the Coeur d'Alene School District proposed a $25 million perpetual supplemental levy and a $5 million school plant facility levy. Both levy requests narrowly failed. We removed perpetuity from the supplemental levy and we fully removed the plant facility levy request and are presenting the revised single levy on May 16; a $25 million two-year supplemental levy. Without the levy, the district will lose 25% of our budget, forcing cuts of 300+ jobs, eliminating programs including sports, and closing one or two elementary schools.
Levy opposition campaign provides questionable info
A levy election campaign postcard recently delivered to homes in the Coeur d’Alene School District included a photo of a drag queen and a series of short questions and statements encouraging voters to shoot down the supplemental levy on today’s ballot in District 271. It was paid for by the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee.
