Mural by John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) in the State Capitol in Topeka, Kan., depicting abolitionist John Brown who advocated violence when needed to free the slaves, attacked the federal Army armory at Harpers Ferry, Va. (now West Virginia) on Oct. 16, 1859, and was hanged for his efforts.
