OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Tecumtum (“Elk Killer”), also called Chief John of the Etch-ka-taw-wah band of Indians living along the Applegate River in southwestern Oregon, battled settlers, miners and government forces in the Rogue River Wars of the 1850s.
