Members of Team Real Life wrestling traveled to Kuna for the USA/Idaho State Wrestling Championships on April 21-22. The tournament hosted approximately 550 athletes who competed in 3 different styles of wrestling — folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman. The folkstyle championships are typically held in the winter but were postponed this year due to weather and travel concerns. This made the tournament particularly grueling for the wrestlers and turned the situation into much more of a test of wills. Wrestlers placing in this tournament are eligible to compete in the national championships if they desire which are held in Fargo, N.D., for the high schoolers and Atlanta for the younger wrestlers. In the front row from left are Damion Hamilton, first in all three styles; Rider Seguine, first in all three styles; Chandler Axtell, first in all three styles; Braxton Mason, first in all three styles; and Braydon Huber, first in all three styles; second row from left, Gavin Rodriguez, 5th in folkstyle; Roddy Romero, 2nd in both folkstyle and freestyle, 3rd in Greco; Byson Huber, 3rd in both folkstyle and freestyle; Damian Hamilton, 3rd in folkstyle, 2nd in freestyle and 1st in Greco; and Will Rossi, 4th in folkstyle & 3rd in Greco; and back row from left, Lane Reardon, 4th in folkstyle, 5th in freestyle and 4th in Greco; Jacob Engles, 5th in folkstyle and 4th in freestyle; Walker Rouse, 5th in Greco; Devine Hill, 4th in folkstyle, 2nd in girls freestyle and 2nd in Greco; Brelane Huber, 3rd in freestyle and 4th in Greco; Jonathan Hill, 5th in freestyle; Wyatt Shelly, 1st in folkstyle and 2nd in freestyle and Tyler Morris, 2nd in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco.
Wrestlers can also earn a special distinction by winning all three styles in a given year, thus earning the right to be called a Triple Crown Winner. Earning that honor this year were Ridge Lovett, Rider Seguine, Matthew Hamilton, Chandler Axtell and Braydon Huber. Team Real Life Triple Crown winners last year, Ridge Lovett and Byson Huber, were presented custom gear bags and trophies by Chris Owens, Director of USA/Idaho Wrestling, in a special ceremony this year before the start of the tournament. Placing but not pictured: Ridge Lovett, Triple Crown; Will Jackson, 1st in both folkstyle and freestyle and 3rd in Greco; John Rudebaugh, 2nd in folkstyle, 3rd in both freestyle and Greco; and Wren Jackson, 6th in folkstyle and Tobias Balch, 3rd in folkstyle and 5th in both freestyle and Greco.
